So I just bought a K-30

Hey everyone,

So I just bought a K-30 with the 18-135mm lens.

First time to Pentax, have previously been a Canon guy. Thought I'd give something new a try!

Any tips and tricks?

If you browse the K-30 forum, you'll probably pick up a few tips. But for specific ones might want to give folks here a hint on what you're looking for. And what you subjects you shoot.

I was more meaning with the operation of the camera. You know how sometimes things have their quirks or features that people may not be aware of straight out of the box.

i.e. It appears the green button can only be set for limited functions....i was hoping to get a dedicated button for AF point selection.

Hold the Ok button to swap between focus point selection and normal directional button tasks.

My only real suggestion is search for "perfect focus every time" thread with a different focus technique many have found useful.

Edit.... Oh and welcome to Pentax

I believe that the AF/AEL button (located on the back) is at default set for auto focus.

To select the focus point you first Press Info button (once) select AF AREA (using 4 way controller) and Rotate the rear E-dial to select how you want the camera set up. If you choose to set your own focus point the 4 way controller is where that task is accomplished. The focal point will be displayed in either live view or through the OVF as a red dot unless you've turned that function off.

There is no need to go to the main menu for this option.

To see what default settings are and what/how they can be changed see pages in the cameras User Manual beginning @ 248.

BTW, good luck there is plenty of customization that can be done on the K30. It's an exceptional value and an excellent tool.

I've had my K-30 for over a year and had no idea you could do this. What menu option is it?

Not through the menu options. From the standby screen press the info button. Select AF active area then choose the one with eleven squares (not auto 11). Press menu to go back to the standby screen. Press ok then the arrows to move your point. Shoot. Is this what you are looking for?

This has to be it!(in OVF mode in the LV mode you have to set the option in the right bottom corner to the box with 4 arrows) In that info menu move with 4way controller and change values with the real wheel. You should also check the Custom menus and set camera to your liking..

good camera choice! I've been using the K-30 for quite a month now and I like it, it offers you a lot of things to choose and to enable or disable as your wish

Congrats! Yes, a lot of nice features for the price...

Just got the k-30 myself :-) and I really like it. I got it as the 18-55 mm / 50-200 mm kit... maybe I will sell the 50-200 mm.

Now, I'm just looking to upgrade with a good "walk-around" lens, such as the 18-270 mm sdm, or possibly the sigma 18-250 mm contemporary (a good bit cheaper)... nice!
