I have AF280T with serial number of 000000386, it is also works with K-30...
fully dedicated, I mean

ADD: at this manner also works almost all AF(XXX) Pentax flashes, that have AUTO sensor and 3 contacts at hot-shoe.
right contact is a "flash ready" information and automatic synchronization.
left additional contact is a "program" and TTL (for TTL flashes)
I mean:
AF160S (latest)
AF200S - 2 auto modes
AF200A - only one program mode.
AF200T - 2 auto modes
AF240Z - 1 program mode
AF260SA - 1 program mode
AF280T - 2 modes
AF400T - 3 modes

BOLD - tested by myself
italics - tested by another users...
all over - should work, I'm quid sure.

You could also try getting a used 360fgz....they can be had for around $100 for one, and they make a great bounce flash

Well I did some experiments with my K-50 and AF 280T and have found the best results for me.
Set the flash from the back moving the slider to the left all the way to 32. Then I use the recommended settings for f stop from green or red settings. Select my lens fstop manually in AV Mode and set the camera to ISO 100. I normally shoot wide open with the flash and these settings work great, good exposures on all shots I have taken. I mostly use Legacy lenses and I tried on my Pentacon 135 Preset, My Helios 40-2 and my Pentacon 50mm and to my surprise all worked well. I now understand that setting the flash on the back will work great on all my lenses and all f stops. Thanks to all here for the help you all have given as I truly appreciate your efforts.

Regards,

Gavin

upper slide it is ONLY mechanical calculator for NON automatic bodies, K1000 or MEsuper for example. or for non "A" lens, M40/2.8 for example.
Upper slider DOES NOT affect exposure at ANY kind.

If You use K-50 and A lens or FA lens or DA lens:
1- set camera at Tv mode (!)
2- set RED or GREEN mode on the flash. change between them if needed
3- set lens aperture dial at "A"

try to change ISO and see, as aperture changing.
IMPORTANT ! - if from some reason FIRST TIME ONLY it will not work, press the shuter button, remove the flash and so on, clean th contacts at hot shoe - but after that it will work always and AUTOMATIC/

please note - tecnically camera is at Tv mode, but practically if You change the ISO - You change the F stops too. You will be able to set shutter slower, than 1/180, but faster will not.
so - it is ISO-Av mode... just try.
see my video before.

BUT - if You use legacy lenses:
1- set ISO at the camera and flash the same (Yeah, upper diale does not affect the exposure, but You need to read it right)
2- read F number form calculator depend of GREEN or RED mode You are using.
3- set this F number at the lens.
for Pentax DSLR usually need to open aperture for 1 stop, so, if calculator shows to You at RED mode/ISO 100 need F number F/4 - so set the 2.8 and be happy. (as You are DID) It will be 1 stop more light. If It too much - close aperture to 3.5 or back to the f/4
note Pentax DNG more better pull to the light, then push to the dark.

(I hope my English is understandable)

Yes you English is great. I fully understand what you are saying and have it built in to my brain. I sure am glad for all your input here as it has helped me a great deal. I just took a few shots using direct flash on the same cat at ISO100 and f4.6
Perfect exposure and when I compared to the f2.8 shot there was quite a difference. f4.6 shows a good deal of sharpness.

I am really liking my pictures with flash now due to folks like you. Thanks for keeping on it. Here is the direct shot at f4.6

I do have a 2 (two) black cats.
and I (for sure) understand, that BLACK cats is a "mess to photos".
for some technical and NOT technical reason they can be +/-2 stops brighter or darker than You can see them.
i call it :"black fur phenomena".

but - if You are use Pentax - do not use low key. as You can see, You can use AF280T at 100 Iso F4 and possibly +1stop (up to 2.8. but try to use -1stop (F/4.5-5.6)
black fur is a very difficult object for automatic system (s). white also very difficult.

but in any case - nice Cat
its name is?

---------- Post added 02-28-14 at 01:49 AM ----------

please note - FLASH sensor has very narrow angle of view. more narrow than 70mm lens at APC sensor.
so,... Black cat at the center of the picture will be LESS black, if it will be close to border of the picture.
