I upgraded my Kx in Nov. The bigger/brighter viewfinder and bigger LCD alone makes it worth it. Plus autofocus and liveview improvements, 1/2 stop noise ISO improvement, and higher resolution. I recommend the AA battery pack and Eneloops.

Maybe I should have also started this thread with a little bit of insight at to what I shoot. Primarily I work with landscapes and nature photography. Very little portraiture or action photography. Not sure if that will tip the scale in favor of the k30 or k5.

Also a little sample of the recent snow/ice storms in Pennsylvania

I went from K-x to K-30. I loved my K-x, but the K-30 was a huge leap up. WR is great, but images are noticeably better, especially when using my Sigma 10-20 which is benefited by every possible pixel more that is on the K-30.

The on,y thing I can think of that might benefit you with the k 5 vs k 30 is the top LCD might be helpful when using a tripod.

I love my k30 and it was a huge improvement from the awesome k-x.

I upgraded from k-x to k-30, though I also considered k-5ii. I think k-5ii will be better than k-30 in the build quality, dynamic range (14-bit raw vs 12-bit), shutter noise, higher burst frame rate, low light focusing without focus assist lamp. I chose k-30 for its lower price, more advanced video options, newer cdaf implementation, and focus peaking.

^^^ like above. Focus peaking can be very useful and that's why I opted for K-30 (also it is less $$). I find it very useful - it works down to very dim light and you can accurately focus those decades-old manual lenses.

I did the same with my Kx at first, but I had a friend prod me off of auto settings. I'm glad he did.

I upgraded from a K-x to a K30 as well... The only thing I miss is the battery life from the K-x. The K-30 eats through the LiOn batteries very, very quickly. I wish they had expanded the grip a little more and removed AA capability to be able to use a K-01 style battery, as those last forever. But, I get better battery life with the K-30 by switching back to Eneloops with the AA holder. Seems every time I pick up the K-30 the battery is dead or near dead, just from sitting. Never had that problem with K-01 or K-x. (Or Q for that matter).

It's a minor niggle, but I always have to make sure I take two spare batteries and the AA adapter with me, just in case. Whereas when I take the K-01, I don't even bother to check the battery most of the time.

Charles.
