Cable release for K30/K50

Hello everyone,

I was anticipating a purchase of a cable release for K50 and came across this at BH photo

Pentax Cable Release 50 30099 B&H Photo Video

Does anyone know if this cable works with K30/K50? I am not familiar with cables and any insight would be appreciated!

That is an old-style cable release for film cameras. It threads into the shutter release button and triggers the shutter mechanically. Your camera requires an electric release that connects using a RCA-type plug to a port on the right side of the camera. Pentax makes a couple of models ($$) and there are also several third-party offerings. I use a Bower unit...

...but you may be able to use a simpler model such as:

No. That link is for a mechanical shutter release.

For a K30 or K50 you will need an electrical cable release. This is similar to audio jack style. Any cable release compatible with Canon D### / Rebel series cameras will also work on Pentax digital.

You might want to go for a remote control type, they can be bought for a similar price, but can be used at greater distances.

Or a set of cactus V5's, for about $100.00 will work as remote shutter and flash controls.

Truly!? I did not know you could trigger the shutter through the hot shoe. The Cactus requires an additional $10 cable (SC-C1) to manage that task and you will need two units, one as a hand-held controller and the other as the receiver. Still though, for about $70 (prices have dropped!) including cable, it is a nice radio-based wireless solution and can allow syncing of multiple cameras through a single controller.

You don't use the hot shoe for shutter triggering, just the cable, so it's one or the other. I trigger my second 540 by putting it in SL2 and it acts as an optical trigger.

I have a cheap e-bay trigger that I fit in the loop of the strap.

I spent quite a bit of time looking for a remote shutter release for my K-50.

Someone mentioned the existence of an app on the Google Play Store called DSLR Remote. It's free, and it works with the IR Blaster already on my phone.

If you have a smart phone with an IR Blaster, give it a go. Not much to lose.
