tethering my k-30

I'm trying to find out the correct version to use that allows me to tether my K-30. Version 7.0 does not support the K-30.

when I go to pktether.com to download the software that would allow me to tether my camera. Under the news tab, it says the new version 7.0 does not support my K-30 and I can't find which one does.

PK tether doesn't support the K30 or any Pentax Camera after the K5 II as far as I'm aware of.

I played with it last week and many options don't work on the K30 and it froze the camera a few times while playing with it.

Yeah pktether is a bit behind... Some got the K30 (and K5ii) to work with it. Try it out. Be sure to put your camera usb mode to PTP and not MSC and try different sequence when starting up... I.E. start software plug camera, turn camera on or the opposite, camera on and plugged then start software...

Some got it to work with no SD card in the camera but technically you should have a card in the camera.

I don't think it is a question of "being behind". Here's what Tomasz writes himself at the ver. 7.0 release:
"I released new version of PK_Tether – changes in this version:
- added support of new models K5II and K5IIs – K30 isn’t supported – probably Pentax made big change in camera firmware and PK_Tether isn’t able to communicate with camera...........I didn’t want to release software in that stage, because it isn’t tested enough, but I received so many request for support new K5II models, that I decided to do that."

So, in other words, support for the last generation is not yet ready because Pentax made changes to firmware. So the software is not working with current generation camera... In my world, that puts it behind.

Don't get me wrong, the guy is doing a great job for no money, two thumbs up, it's a handy software and the only true tethering solution for us Pentaxian. But the software compatibility is still one generation behind the currently available cameras, 1.5 gen if you consider the K-30/K-50 as different generations.

Not fully tested but my K-5 works with the latest pktether and has to be in MSC USB mode to operate.
PTP results in a totally inoperable camera.

While ever I'm connected to pktether, the status screen strobes. I do wonder if a program like this could cause any harm to my camera.

PKTroggercord

I did not try it with my K-30 yet, but the site claims K-30 compatibility:

I guess the developer should whip the code monkeys a little more frequently so that they don't get behind. Perhaps they can be bribed with cash. Seriously though, a toolmaker has to choose his targets and the second-tier Pentax bodies have always been a little different than their big brothers.

I can tether my K-30 with pkTriggerCord except for one minor flaw. Shutter Speed defaults to 30" and even if I try to set it father; it Click "Take Picture" and hear the shutter click. Then wait 10-12" before the second click and it downloads the photo. Even at 1/180"

Camera is set on Manual and under STATUS, I can see all the settings except Shutter Speed is listed as "0"

Yeah. Can tether k30 with pktriggercord. Pretty much installed everything from the site of pktriggercord. Operating system windows 2003 (don't ask why). Drawbacks. For some reason this thing does not take pic straight away and I can't see on pc screen live view. So I point pentax at the object, can focus it, but it would take like 10 secs to shoot anything (maybe I messed up settings and I am doing it wrong).

If in doubt, try using pktriggercord just at the command line.
