I would prefer if Pentax were to give up the idea of a stripped down entry level model, even one as good as the K-500.

Maybe they got low on their supply of gyroscopes, led viewfinder indicators, weather seals, lithium ion batteries and chargers, and then the K500 was born?

Dunno.

Can't see why you'd *reduce* choice.

You can pitch one customer such as yourself something better than a mid-level APS-C Canon, but another something cheaper.

Having said that, I believe you've got your wish and the K-500's being discontinued.

Interesting. How much does the K500 cost in the UK? The "in the box" tab off bhphoto's site shows the American version has no rechargeable battery or charger: Pentax K-500 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

Correct. The K-500 was a limited run camera for the holidays. Pentax/Ricoh wanted a low cost option to compete with the very entry level Canon systems being blown out at the time. The production run ended and there are no plans for another.

K-500 also lacks level indicator. A small thing, but I use it a lot on my K-30 (probably shows bad technique!)
I'm assuming the level indicator is also on the K50?

Yes, the K-50 has a level-indicator. It is also still a good value at around $400, even though this thread is many months old.

Thanks for confirming the level indicator on the K50.
