I reported same on PU and someone replied that they tried their Sigma 17-50/2.8 and also found that it doesn't do the mirror flip at f4.0 on the K-30.

Unless there's a sound technical reason, I'd say we're looking at a software bug.

F4.0 works on the K-30 and Sigma 17-50/2.8 HSM .

Confirmed on my k-30 also, with the tamron 70-300 LD Di telephoto lens.

Totally weird but proves a point that it doesn't actually need to fire the shutter, but as above this is f4 occurrence is probably a software glitch.

My Sigma 30mm f1.4 also - silent start/stop at F4 only.

the aperture blades get stopped down to f/4 for live view. if you have the aperture set to anything but f/4 the mirror/aperture lever mechanism has to go through the rest of a cycle to switch to the new setting.

Sounds plausible I suppose.
Except this doesn't happen with the K-7 and probably not the K-5/K-5ii which is why I didn't expect it to happen with the K-50.
Does it happen with the K-3? Because it's really annoying actually.

Based on the hacking thread these are quite different cameras software and processor wise. The newer K-30 upwards, so K-50 and K-3 are based on a different CPU type, so the concept of the code will be the same, but there will be differences. However it's likely to be a different take on how they should behave.

One could also ask why it's fixed at/defaults to f4 for liveview? I assume there is a reason, but ideally the screen should show what's actually going to be recorded?

It has been said before when I mentioned the same thing re the K-01, that showing the movie exposure exactly as it will be recorded might render the preview hard to see in bright sun because you'd be stopped right down or using an ND filter, so the screen would be quite dark. So we have to rely on the exposure meter readout as the camera shows us max brightness
Would be good to have the 'option' to choose which movie recording preview method we want to use though.

I guess my thought was that this was going to happen when you started recording and the actual aperture was set, so why the 'pretend' setting up front?

Yep, I agree. I'd like the option to choose.
