There are many factors to consider when thinking of sharpness. The 18-135 is a great lens, I love mine, however it does need to be stopped down some. It is not a lens that performs great wide open. My copy gets a little soft from 90-135mm, so I stop down a little more in that range. As you increase your focal length to the longer end you have to increase you shutter speed to compensate for camera movement. For best depth of field you may want to keep your f stop around f8-f11. Even at f8 your depth of field can be very narrow at 135mm, especially if the subject close. In these cases having everything in focus may be impossible.

Here is shot of my dog with the 18-135 on my K50. Shot at f8 1/100 at 88mm. His head and eye is in focus and sharp but that is about it.
