What a difference a lens makes! These were shot with the Pentax 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 WR. Then again the ISOs are a little bit higher. Both of them were processed in RawTherapee.

ISO 6400 f/5.6

ISO 5000 f/5.6

Just got a used Tamron 17-50 f2.8. So far, I think it's a really great value.

Just got a Cameron graduated 1 to 8 stop ND filter. Went to a local falls to try it out. Day is quite dark with thick North Atlantic clouds. All pics taken at extreme (8 stops). (Click pics for EXIF info...6-30 sec exposures.)

Observations:

1. With both my Sigma 17-50 HSM and Sigma 10-20 you can get purple X shaped artifacts at the most extreme wide apertures at 30 secs. With shorter exposures this did not happen. Don't know if this is a light leak or what but will experiment further. This color issue can also be seen in the coloration of the 1st (6 sec) and 2nd (25 sec) pics above the falls.

2. The graduated filter makes focusing quite easy as autofocus on the K-50 is fine at 1 stop so focus can be set and then the camera set to manual to hold the focus setting while simply turning the filter to add f-stops.

3. My normal exposure bias setting with these lenses is -.3 stops. This resulted in way to dark pics and only by going to +1 EV did the pictures come out well.

Incidentally this falls faces due east and the sun will be rising to it's face in a few weeks. Hope to get some good dawn shots then. But the ice will likely be gone then.

Tried a somewhat different technique here: 6 pics taken at f/16, 100 ISO and setting the ND filter from 2 to 4 stops. This led to frames at .5 to 2.5 secs. Processed the frames with SilkyPix "Strong Contrast" and some sharpening. Stacked them using StarStaX using Average.

This workflow produces a horsehair effect much with the stream flow more than a creamy effect and it pleases my eye a bit more. You can see the texture in the 100% crop.

D'ya like pretty chunks of metal?

This is a Smith & Wesson 617-6 revolver I'm in the process of selling (VA Gun Trader - Buy, Sell and Trade Guns for Free! - username="user"), but I found I enjoyed taking pictures of beautifully machined stainless steel. There happened to be a coil of yellow nylon tow-strap behind the one in which the cylinder's open, and I liked the way the light reflected down the cartridge chambers.

I was thinking the same about that poor whale, and the toning reminds me of film.

Thanks, it was an early morning, got up at 3:30am, met up with a mate down at the mud flats at Port Adelaide and had some light painting fun

It's actually an art installation and not a real whale
