Test shot in the store this morning, a used Tamron 90mm Macro on my K-50. Handheld, ambient light only. The lens came home with me!

It’s a chunk of lava rock from the Big Island of Hawaii, from a 1974 eruption outside of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The piece is about two inches across, the large bubble in the center view is maybe a quarter-inch... It’s all frothy due to the gasses trapped in the lava as it cooled. Colors are minerals in the rock, at microscopic size. I’ve been trying to get the whole darn thing in focus, as you might imagine that’s pretty close to impossible without stacking and good glass.

I've had my K-50 for around six months now. Picked up a 80-320mm smc pentax-fa 1:4.5 - 5.6 off ebay and had a lot of fun taking duck photos this winter. Bought a K-3 in case my K-50 developed problems but it's still ticking.

The focus looks sharp. Any tips for nailing it? Spot focus in AF.C?

it does as does yours.....I bounce around between afs & afc and various af zone stuff but typical is afs & spot......a lil faster shutter speed may help but the motion blur adds flavor to the action

A K-3 as a back up for a K-50 huh? Lots of love for the ol' K-50 It's a great camera indeed, I enjoy mine more than I thought I would. That sensor is pretty sweet and the ergonomics are actually very nice.

I keep thinking about replacing my Tamron 70-300 LD DI with either the older DA 55-300 5.8, or the FA 80-320... and sometimes I consider the FA 100-300 5.8 as well (though I read that the build quality is just not very good on that one). I really like how the old 80-320 renders in some scenes - the colors are pretty rich and I've read that the AF is actually pretty good for moving objects - you seem to have a bit of experience with that
But honestly I don't know if any of those can get anywhere near the quality I get from my manual focus lenses - I know the Tamron can't get anywhere near my SMC-M 100 2.8, SMC-M 200 f4, SMC-A 70-210 f4 or even the Takumar Bayonet 135 2.8, which is a great lens, much better than I think people realize.
So a year later, I haven't pulled the trigger on a newer tele zoom yet...

I'm mostly using spot focus in AF.S. Kinda hard using AF.C with the noisy background.

I had to buy a Pentax-FA AF 100-300mm f/4.7-5.8 from ebay. I assume everyone was ignoring the listing because it was being sold by a thrift shop but it was in great condition and fully tested. Won it for $18.25.
When I tested it against the 80-320mm, they were both just as sharp but the 80-320 produced the richer colors.
