Using 1:1.4/50 Prime (M42) on K-50 for familiy photos

Hi All,

I am wondering whether i can use 1.4/50 for indoor family photos. The lighting might not be great.

Just started experimenting with my K-50 and also i have 1.2/1.7/1.8 primes (again M42 mount mostly).

Thanks

You can, why not? it is certainly faster than almost anything else available in a newer lens. However, I would think it might be a little long unless the room is big enough. Depends on whether you are doing group or head shots. And whether you have enough space to back up. 50mm on APS-C is a nice portrait length in general.

So you already have 50mm lenses with f1.2 and f1.7? Then I dont see how f1.4 would be much more or less useful than the others. Slightly brighter than f1.7, not quite as bright as f1.2.
A 50mm f1.4 is a good lens for low light photos and portraits, but it hard to say if it the right lens. Think of getting an AF lens with a wider angle, like DA 35mm f2.4. Not as bright, but fast AF and a field of view that is slightly more comfortable indoors. Then you can take your f1.2 for low light portraits and the 35mm for group photos. Modern cameras have good high ISO performance, so f2.4 is not too dark. And you can even try using fill flash

I think any one of those lenses would work well. How big of a print are you targeting? Depending on that answer you may be able to stop down the aperture to f/2.8 or even f/4 and turn the ISO up to 800 or more to 1600. Flash will help too.
