Actually, the opposite is true, you won't be able to open the lens, the diaphragm is already closed all the way in an un-mounted lens (w/o a ring, that is). You'll have to shoot in manual mode, meter as you normally would in manual, and adjust your settings accordingly. Focus will be difficult due to dark viewfinder image. DOF is pretty shallow in macro anyway, paper thin with lens wide open.
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
