Now I look like a genius... relatively

I just saw that the K-500 has been discontinued; I am sure glad I opted for the K-50 so I'm not stuck with an orphan.

Almost every consumer product gets discontinued eventually. Your K-50 will be a relic one day too. My K-30 is already beginning it's journey into old age.

My K5 will be a great camera until Ricoh sells it's second FF body.

I bought the K-01 after it was discontinued. What are you implying, eh, that I'm dumb? eh?

Absolutely, but at least I'll get some time with it before that happens. I'd hate to have an orphan before I even get the corners shiny.

Errrr.. They don't suddenly stop working after the production runs are over.
Not sure what you mean by orphaned. Just enjoy the camera until you don't

Actually, "orphan" was the wrong word. The mother company is still around, but still I'm happy that I have a current production model at least until I get the new worn off of it.

The K1000 from the film era has been discontinued for years, yet it's still a great camera, especially for beginners!

Seems to me the better move is to snatch one up just AFTER they're discontinued, when the price drops, but before stocks get low enough to make the prices rise again.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

I don't know that there is any wrong or right. It's all in what you want. I chose what I did based on the features and then found it at the best price I could. At the time they were both current production models so I'm just glad I chose the one that survived. The thing I see is that Pentax prices seem to hold up very well; a used K-30 is typically, from what I've seen, within $100 of what I paid new for the K-50, and I at least have a warranty.

My K500 is still working and taking photos - are you suggesting it should have stopped working by now?

Hmmmm... I'll go back reread my original post, but I certainly don't recall saying anything remotely like that.
"I just saw that the K-500 has been discontinued; I am sure glad I opted for the K-50 so I'm not stuck with an orphan."
Nope, don't see anything there about anything not working.

Hmmmm... I don't recall saying anything about buying used, perhaps after you reread YOUR original post, you should re-read mine!

I'm a long way from the Atlantic but the Pacific has been playing havoc with our weather the last few weeks. The thing is, irony, sarcasm, etc. often don't translate well into the written word. My apology for the snarky reply.

Yeap, you look like a genius by choosing k-50 over plastic wonders of similarly priced Canikon models, not over the k-500 with features like WR, penta prism, two dials and then some... I am sure you enjoy it......
