Firmware

I see that my K-50 has firmware version 1.00 and there is a newer version 1.02 available on the Pentax website. Is it worthwhile and advisable to download and install the newer firmware? Does anyone know the specific issues that were address in updates 1.01 and 1.02. There is some general gobbledygook on the website but few specifics. What, if any, are the risks?

The latest firmware update adds compatibility for the teleconverter and the AF 540 flashes, as well as stability fixes. There's no reason not to update as long as you follow the instructions

Personally I always download any new firmware. As long as you follow the instruction there should not be a risk, and make sure you have a fully charged battery. It looks like the firmware updates are mostly for specific lenses, but the "Improved stability for general performance" that they always mention is unknown. Some think it may fix unmentioned problems or add functionality, who really knows?

Then I shall apply the update. One question before I do though... in the article referenced above is says to opt for the MAC version even if running windows. That seems odd to me; is that correct and what is the reason for it?

I used the Windows one every time I update, because why else would they put a Wondows one if they didn't intend for it to be used?

Not sure, but if you read this thread it might give one pause:

I'm sure there will be, Pentax is good about stuff like that.

I used the MAC version as suggested and copied the .bin to the root of the SD card. The update went like clockwork and in a minute or two the camera was updated without a hitch. Thanks for all the help!
