K-30 Mirror lock-up

Why on earth did they decide not to feature a mirror lock up?

It works in video mode? Why not when shooting stills?

I am not sure that mirror lock up adds that much on a digital SLR with an ASP-c sensor. Even in the glory days of film, very few cameras had mirror lockup as a feature. It was usually reserved for pro level cameras.

It's just silly that when shooting in live-view mode, the mirror flaps up and down for no reason, especially in manual mode where it doesn't even need to measure light.

I agree. It sure makes for a clunky experience when using live mode. The mirror automatically locks up with 2 or 10 second shutter delay when using the viewfinder, however.

Yep. So it seems that the camera has *every* mechanism for a decent mirror lock-up, they just don't implement it in firmware. Seems so silly!

The higher models have a real mirror lock up (not tied to the 2 second delay drive mode). An artificial crippling of a feature to distinguish product lines.

Just to clarify a bit on this point about mirror lock-up on the K-30 / K-50, the mirror doesn't lock up with the 10 second delay, but does with the 2 second delay. With the 10 second delay, after pressing the shutter release button, the timer counts down the 10 seconds and then the mirror goes up, immediately followed by the shutter release. With the 2 second delay, the mirror goes up and 2 seconds later the shutter releases. You can hear the difference between the two settings, as well as see the difference by using the pop-up flash. With the 2 second delay, the mirror goes up together with the pre-flash and two seconds later the shutter is released along with the main flash. With the 10 second delay, you'll only see one flash when the mirror goes up and the shutter releases after the 10 second delay because the pre-flash and the main flash take place so close to one another they appear as one flash.
