I have been into automotive photography for years, but finally got me a DSLR. My K-50. I got the two lens kit with the 50-200mm, and I imagine it could do well for now.

My question is to anyone here that shoots automotive racing with a K-50. If any of you are out there. Just wondering what lens/lenses you use. I was wanting to eventually get something with a 300mm zoom, and was hoping that someone in here could give me some good ideas for zoom lenses pentax or other brand, that do a good job with sharpness/AF/etc...

I've been looking through the lens reviews for a few hours now, but I don't see a lot of reviews specifically about trying to do some fast shooting.

Any help would be appreciated.

I started with a K-x and a 55-300...it was ok but a bit slow.
K5 or K3 + Sigma 70-200 2.8 or Sigma 300 2.8 have given me great results.

following as that will be next type of lens.......300 zoom or 400 prime.....not exceeding much over 300 bucks

Thanks. I've seen Sigma zoom lenses go for a very reasonable price, but wanted to know if anyone here had good results with them.

I use a K7 and a 1st DL with Tamron 28-200 and Sigma 70-300 zooms. Sharpness on a high speed moving object is a little subjective. The sharpness will depend a lot on getting the car in focus and what shutter speed is used.


AF as we all know with Pentax is not as good as Canon or Nikon. The funny thing is, I think my DL is faster at focusing then my K7.

The 50-200 kit lens would be fine to use. Just be sure to use a high shutter speed or if shooting at night bump up the ISO so you can keep a high shutter speed.
