The Sigma 18-125mm seems to have been discontinued, so you're essentially limited to superzooms (i.e. the Sigma or Tamron 18-200mm) or shorter premium lenses (Sigma 17-70mm, Pentax 16-85mm). I'd still go for the Pentax lens- it's worth it. You can get it for around $300 in kits.

As stated now discontinued, but the Sigma 18-125mm HSM is a reasonable lens. Ebay for a low price?

i am surprised that sigma discontinued the 18-125.

seems to be an ideal size.

well not in Australia, you can still purchase it new, I used to have one ( the latest HSM , the older non HSM are rather poor performer ) good performer.
There are few good super zooms around, all are good performers
Pentax DA 18-250 ( by Tamron) you can only buy used ones
Pentax DA 18-270 ( by Tamron) new still available
there are few Sigmas 18-250 , the best one is the latest one announced 3 years ago
Sigma 18-250 DC HSM Macro ( non OS in Pentax mount) , the easiest way to identify it is by 62mm filter size.

You may find a used Tamron 28-105 for $60. Not as long, not as wide, but very sharp. It was also rebranded as Pentax and Promaster.

There is a Tamron 18-200 that is available in the K mount. It is OK, although I'm not a big fan of any of the lenses in this category. If you find a used copy of the DA 18-135 it isn't very expensive at this point. I've seen them going for 250-ish in the marketplace.

Don't forget the FA series zooms. Some were quite good! The 28-105mm f/3.2 is very nice. Cruise through the lens database section here on PF and take a look at some image samples.

Pentax FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5 AL (IF) was a stellar lens, not to be confused with the Pentax/Tamron FA 28-105 f/4-5.6 (IF) or the older FA 28-105 f/4-5.6 motorzoon which actually was quite a decent performer in it's days. I rank those as...

1. FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5 AL (IF)
2. FA 28-105 f/4-5.6 (power zoom, internal zoom)
3. FA 28-105 f/4-5.6 (IF) - rebranded Tamron.

adam,

i think i am going to take your advice and return my 18-55 kit for the 18-135 kit.

for the extra $250, i don't want to regret it.

Good call IMO! You'll really enjoy that silent AF.
