My first DSLR: K-50 (q. about settings)

I started out on my mom's Spotmatic when I was a kid, eventually bought my own Spotmatic and a few lenses as a teenager. Now I've bought my first DSLR, the K-50, and I'm thrilled with it. But some of the settings confuse me. I'm shooting RAW on TAv mode, and I have the autofocus points set to manually selectable. This is what makes most sense to me, coming from a fully manual 35 mm camera. (But I am using autofocus most of the time because it's magical!) I think I changed the upper end ISO threshold. I turned off the annoying beep sounds.

What other settings should I consider changing? Is it ok to leave white balance on auto in most circumstances? What the heck is Pixel Mapping and when would I need it?

Have you read the in depth review of the k-50? I just got mine as well and reading that was very helpful

The k-50's white balance is usually fine on auto. The only time I mess with it is if I'm working in weird light such as sodium vapor street lights.

Pixel mapping allows you to mask out a pixel if it has failed. Not something to worry about.

Everyone has different settings they prefer so it's hard to give a list. Here is the k-50 review which might be of some use: Pentax K-50 Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews
And the recommended settings page: Pentax K-50 Review - Recommended Settings | PentaxForums.com Reviews

Thanks so much, that's just what I was looking for. I think I skimmed that review before I bought the camera. Time to read it thoroughly.

^ I keep a copy of the K-50 manual on my phone jsut in case I need a reference about a feature that I'm not sure of.

Thanks. I downloaded a copy of the manual and skimmed it before the camera arrived. It doesn't do such a good job at explaining some things. Good suggestion to keep it on my phone for reference.

Not at first but after you use the camera a while you will come across a feature you never used before and then the manual is there. But no question it is a tough read at first.
