K-50 3rd Party P-TTL Flash Compatability

Hey all,

I have a K-50 and I'm looking for a good P-TTL flash I can use off camera with a cable. I've been looking at the Vivitar DF383PEN, but I've been seeing bits and pieces around the forums indicating that 3rd party P-TTL support is hit or miss based on the manufacturer. So my questions are:
  • Is the DF383PEN P-TTL compatible?
  • Are there any good entry level P-TTL flashes that are on the lower end of the price spectrum <$200 USD?

The Metz 44 is one of the best values for the money IMO, at just over $200. It tilts and swivels and also packs lots of advanced features.

The Vivitar flash you mentioned also supports P-TTL. It's sold under a variety of different brand names.

Hey Adam,

Thanks for the quick response. have there been any confirmed issues with using the P-TTL on the Vivitar on the K-50? I heard something about the P-TTL spec changing slightly rendering most 3rd party flashes unusable for the TTL on newer bodies.

Adam, does the Metz 44 have wireless?
I have Vivitar PF 383 PEN on my k-50 and K-7 . Batteries drain fair.

Does P-TTL work on the Vivitar without any fuss? over/under-exposure?

I ordered one made by Bolt sold on Amazon, advertised as Pentax DSLR ttl compatible. But it isn't. Strictly a TTL unit, not P-TTL. Sent it back and ordered a real Pentax unit from B&H.
