If you go out on a bright snowy day or a out to the beach youll find things shooting dark as well since the camera is seeing a lot of light and is trying to adjust for it.
Try the same shot with your flash on and see what results you get - I'd bet it will look a lot more 'normal' to you.
I did take the same lamp shot with the flash on and it seemed pretty normal this time around.
