My K50 is kaput!!

Ok I have had this for two years now and when I first got it I compared it to my old K100D and felt that pictures were underexposed. I did finally get used to it and the camera took some decent pictures.

Over the past few days my camera seems to have developed a quirk. In low light conditions, it doesn't seem to record anything. If I point it at my monitor it seems to take a picture alright sometimes, but at other times, nothing.

I put my fastest lens on it, my 50mm f1.7. Set Av mode and left aperture wide open. I don't get an image unless I'm pointing directly at the light on the ceiling.

I used my 50-200mm kit lens, tried bulb mode, set ISO800, and set aperture wide open at f5.6 at 200mm. Left the shutter open for 2 minutes. This is what I got.

I set live view and set the aperture to f1.7, but the aperture ring in the lens looks like its stopped down completely.

I did a reset, still the same. I am hoping it is because of some custom setting, but it looks like something is completely screwy.

Hi mylittlepwny. Have you checked your ISO? Just a thought. Someone here will be able to help you.

Here is one picture using the aperture ring set to "A" and setting the aperture at f1.7 on the camera.

And here is me setting the aperture ring to f1.7 manually.

I'm screwed aren't I?

I did. If you click the pictures I posted above and see the EXIF data, they are both at ISO800.

The first image with the aperture ring set to "A" was at ISO800, f1.7 and 1/6 shutter speed.

The second (even though it is brighter) was with aperture set to f1.7 manually, ISO800 and 1/200 shutter speed.

Maybe the contacts are dirty on either your lens or camera. Somebody here will be able to tell you what to check for. They are very good like that here. Good luck.

Contacts seem fine. All the pins on the camera seem fine too. The third pin seems different compared to the others, it is less raised than the others. Don't know if it is supposed to be that way

K-30 and K-50 has problems whith the aperture mechanism. My K-30 did the same a few times after my first ~5000 shot, but I was lucky because after a few days of malfunction, it works again.

My k-50's aperture mechanism is acting up and it's intermittent. When I first turn on the camera after letting it sit, it won't open the aperture to the set value via camera. Manual aperture works fine. Given enough shots with the camera, the auto aperture feature works again until the camera gets powered off and sits for a while. Seems like you're having aperture issues as well, fairly similar to my own. I'm in the process of saving for a k3, but will keep the crippled k-50 around for manual shooting and a few other things.

I'd pick up a used K-5 instead. After my K-30 died on me KEH let me upgrade for another $45 to a K-5 and its probably the best little camera for the money. They can be had from $250-$325 used and I think somebody was selling one here a bit ago.

I guess I'm lucky. I have two K-50's.... each with almost 10,000 shutter actuations each..... and nary a problem. I love them. Best DSLR I've ever owned, with honorable mentions to my K-x, K10D, K-r and the K2000!

Diaphragm Control Block needs replacement

I sent my K50 in for repair under warranty - it only had like 1200 shutter count. Got severely underexposed images - some of them totally black. It was aperture lever failure. From reading posts - quite a few K30 models are also affected.
The repair invoice indicated that the Diaphragm Control Block was replaced. Crossing my fingers that it won't fail again because I suspect the part replaced is of the same design. For those with past warranty - Ricoh/Pentax ought to recall and fix free of charge. But that most likely will not happen.

It sucks that that happened, aperture lever failing. Seems to be coming quite common now
I hope my K-50 stays strong as it has no issue and is fairly underused at only around 5500 clicks
