Depth of field

I'm struggling to get the right aperture setting when the subject is a bit closer. Not really macro.
When the shot looks OK on the screen it often turns out not to have too much in focus when I look on the computer.

It isn't easy to see the depth of field in the viewfinder. My old camera had a depth of filed button you could press which closed the aperture so you could see what your picture would come out like.

Is there a rule of thumb or any such guide that can help me get more of the image sharp? I've seen some good sharp pictures on f5.6 whcih I think is what I used on the attached image - but maybe I'm just too close? Then again, I've seen some good sharp macro so ... ...

You should be able to map the K-50's raw button to do depth of field preview

As for this shot, you might get a better result simply by taking a few steps back and stopping down to F8 or so.

DoF - f8 at 1 metre approx 120mm
DoF - f11 at 1 metre approx 170mm

Taking a step back

DoF - f5.6 at 2 metres approx 360mm
DoF - f8 at 2 metres approx 510mm
Dof - f11 at 2 metres approx 730 mm

One technique, one I use a lot for this sort of subject, is to use TaV mode.
  • Aperture f11
  • Shutter Speed 1/250
  • ISO looks after itself. Any resulting noise can be easily treated in PP

Macrophotography is a demanding area of photography, Just beware that stopping down too much can be detrimental to image quality..

1:1 center crops from the Pentax K5IIs with the Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 16mm

..but sometimes with macro work you simply have no choice but to go above f/16.

Yeah , I should try that. I shoot mainly in Jpeg at the moment so find the Raw button useful for switching to Raw.

I think I must have taken this one on P setting. I often use A with f8 set . If I could have seen the amount of blur on screen I might have retaken the shot with higher f. The pictures look much sharper on screen. I guess this shot may have needed f16.

I'm still trying this new lens out (17-70) and finding what suits it. One day I may get the hang of it !!!
