Because it was introduced as the low-end of the K line. Simple as that.

That is also something I have wondered about, and it's probably the price. For what the K-50 and K-30 sold for new, what you get from Canon or Nikon is indeed an entry-level camera—so it's guilt by association. Even if you forget all the other high-end features of the K-30 and K-50, just the dual-dial controls for aperture and shutter speed (not to mention weather-proofing) set them way above any other entry-level camera.

The price and features of the K-30/K-50 are aimed at purchasers who may be new to dSLR photography. General characteristics of entry-level models include:
  • Lower price
  • Somewhat lower technical and performance specifications (you get what you pay for)
  • Emphasis on ease of use. A good example would be multiple scene modes similar to consumer P&S and super-zoom models.
What distinguishes the Pentax offerings are features and performance that overlap those of more expensive enthusiast-grade cameras at very competitive prices.

I would suggest that this is a fine answer and I can only add the following:

At this time the K-50 is the low price point ENTRY into Pentax K mount DSLR's. The KS-2 is more expensive, the KS-1 is no longer made, etc.

Ok

Scene mode is for entry-level.

Other M, Sv, TaV, B Mode etc is for mid-level

You see 2 different mode.

Also shutter is 1/6000 sec.

Sometimes these things are semantics in the marketing world. As the K30/50 are the first DSLR cameras from Pentax in the line-up, price wise, they are therefore "entry level". As you go up in equipment price, you gain many features, loose a few maybe you did not need and you have the "enthusiast" level cameras. Then move up a bit more and now you have the Pro level cameras. Pentax has had a series of entry and 'thusiast cameras for a while with the 645D being the pro level until they came out with the K-3 (maybe K5) and now K-1 which may be considered Pro level cameras. I will tell you, it really does not matter what camera you have if you are making money with it. If you are working part time, you're a semi pro, full time, all the way Pro! But to me, it is less about making the money and more about having the system you need to make the images!

You funny about money.

Just look on camera body have 2 dials, control on any mode like Av, Sv, any mode is for mid-range.

Entry-level mean no 2 dials and no control. And 1/4000 sec.

K-50 is worth $800. Later go down $400. Like K-3 was worth $1,300. Now is $700.

Got it.

entry level?

IMO entry level is only a marketing tool. Is a K5 II or a K3 (II) that much better as a K30? Is 24MP better as 16MP? Yes and no.
I use my K30 with limited Pentax lenses and some quality zooms and I am very satisfied with the results.
The only thing I like to see improved is the autofocus. If Pentax can realize that I never need a Full frame.

If you were new to DSLR's and wanted to buy Pentax, not wanting to spend too much you would logically enter the market with Pentax's entry level models. That is certainly what these were.

I am not new
I has k10d and k-7.

How do you know mid-range ?

I knew K-30/50 are MID-RANGE clearly.

I think you don't know which one entry-level or Mid-Range or High-End.

Surely you jest but I am not sure where the humour lies. My K-30 is rated for 100,000 actuation per the manual, and it easily past 50,000.
