Good advice, and worth the cost to avoid problems.

I loved my Takumars so much, I bought Spotmatics to take full advantage of them.

I have had success with the original one (Japan or Philippines). I wouldn't touch the fotodiox one as it does not click into place and gets stuck on the lens. When I tried to contact them I heard nothing back. Haven't tried any others.

Save yourself the hassle, spend a little extra on ebay and get an original pentax one.

The adapter to get is one that is a genuine Pentax one, I have two, one came in a box and the other in a plastic envelope. I also have a flanged adapter (that will not allow for infinity focus) that is my preferred adapter as it covers the camera contacts when I use a lens that would otherwise leave them open to the elements. The flanged adapter is not a branded one but works fine, I fit it to the lens first, then the combination to the camera, take the lens off with the adapter then take off the adapter from the lens.

Go to ebay; type "Genuine Pentax M42 K mount adapter" or variations thereof into the search bar. It's that easy.

If you decide after all that to take a chance on a third-party variant, add "infinity focus" to your search.

What do you think of something like this? New Pentax M42 42mm to PK K Mount Adapter Infinity focus | eBay

I wouldn't - please take the advice and get an original pentax one

you will not regret it

Don't get the ones that have the broad ring as this fits outside the body and I believe that it can affect focus at infinity.

Get the smaller one as it fits inside the lens mount on the body and allows the full focus range of the lens.

a suggestion for anyone else looking for one of these
======================================

If you know of some old camera stores in your region, especially ones that prefer Canon or Nikon or other brands and look down on Pentax, and check their bargain camera accessory junk bins. That's how I found an original PK to m42 adapter for 5 dollars, not the 30 they go for on ebay. The ebay sellers know people still want this adapter, but the store keeper probably thought "Nobody wants these stupid things anymore. I wonder if anybody will EVER even pay 5 bucks for it!" It was in the original Pentax packaging so it was easy to see it was original.

The one with the flange seems better so you don't have to use the tool to swap the lens from M42 to Standar K lenses. Do you feel the one with the flange works good?

Does the flanged adapter lock to the camera with the standard locking pin?

I don't like the flush lens adapter because I have to use the tool.

I'm not sure what the differences are between the original and other adapters. I know I can get the original unlatched from a camera body with only a ballpoint pen tip in a few seconds, and the adapter removed in perhaps a half of a minute total.

I have both genuine Pentax and a Kalt that was new but old stock. The Kalt requires a tool but is very well made and reliable just like my Pentax.
