I've got 12737 actuations and the motor is failed on my K-30. I also probably took about 2000 of those shots with it while it was failed and maybe 50% of them were usable.

By all accounts there was a part defect, that can affect some models. It's the same mechanism and design as always on this model l range (lower end entry-consumer orientated), so the design itself is not to blame.

It affects some cameras at different times, and some remain unaffected.

If all the ones that had failed did so at the same time we'd be talking recall, but Pentax have quietly funded the warranty period replacements and said nothing public about it.

I feel sorry for anyone affected outside of the warranty period, as Pentax just don't want to know. It might be a weather sealed rugged unit, but a tiny component is rendering it close to useless very prematurely, in terms of how long the rest of the unit will keep operating for.

3779 actuations on my K50 and no issues so far. Half of the time I shoot with M42 and Pentax M manual lenses. I bought my K50 in May 2015.

I filled out the survey form. My K-30 is almost 17.000 shots heavy and I never had any problems with it. Hoping for the best!

I've had my K50 for about 8 months (bought new, although judging by the date on the battery, 2014, fairly old stock) and shutter count is probably less than 1000. Nothing to report, so I'm not sure there is any value in my responding to the survey.
Before buying it I'd visited Pentax Forums quite often, but never really appreciated how prevalent this problem could be. Once I joined after buying the K50, somehow it has become a major issue in my mind, so much so that I rarely visit here - far too depressing reading about the likely future demise of the gear I had been looking forward to using as the K30/50 thread seems to be dominated by the problem. No way am I investing further in the Pentax system, I use mostly my old Praktica lenses and will consider future direction when it dies or get fed up with my limited lens line-up. If I'd done a bit more research here first I would have steered clear of the thing - talk about buyer's regret! That, along with the unbelievably short battery life (410 shots? - I wish, 150 more likely) suggests that next buy may not be Pentax, which is a shame as I used to use Pentax SLRs.
Sorry, rant over. I expect a number of people have been there, bought the T-shirt and so on, but Pentax's silence on the matter is in my opinion likely to put people who have bought into the system at entry level off from continuing with the brand.

regards
Pete

Survey with shutter count.

I have a K30 and have not had any problems with the shutter not functioning as it should.

k_30 and KX

My k-30 is fine at around 5000 shutter clicks. I do however have a KX that has shutter issues....around 40,000 clicks.

I purchased my K-30 December 15, 2012. The first actuator fail was with 160 shutter count in 2013. I got it fixed under warranty.
The second time was in 2015 with a shutter count of 5099. I got it fixed for about 200 dollars. So far since then it seems to be working correctly. Shutter count now is at 5600.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

I entered my info into the survey. I had trouble during my family reunion last thanksgiving after having owned my k-30 for almost 2.5 years. I think the shutter count was around 1500. Purchased in July 2013. Fortunately I had purchased an extended warranty offered by Pentax and had it repaired at no cost except shipping. I am disappointed with Pentax after having spent, for me, a lot of money on the body and a few extra lenses. I was hoping to get another lens or two but now am wary of having another failure.

My K30 was purchased new and began giving problems in late 2014. It is serial 4370052 (not sure if there is a correlation in that regard). It now has 12,186 shutter actuations, but I still use it in manual mode from time to time, so the failure would have been at about 11,000. My K50 is running faultlessly at 5,461 shutter actuations.
