Just completed the survey,

Camera PENTAX K-30
Shutter Count 8,934
Manufacture Date 2012:09:17

I'm surprised at the shutter count, I thought i'd put way more clicks on than that before I upgraded to the K3.
No troubles here though, apart from the battery clip.

Survey done.
11.996 clicks, purchased sep 2013.
No problems so far.

Before buying it I'd visited Pentax Forums quite often, but never really appreciated how prevalent this problem could be. Once I joined after buying the K50, somehow it has become a major issue in my mind, so much so that I rarely visit here - far too depressing reading about the likely future demise of the gear I had been looking forward to using as the K30/50 thread seems to be dominated by the problem.
I feel a bit the same, I hope it won't happen to my camera as I am very pleased with it. Survey outcome may put a different light to it.
Don't have buyers' regret, though.

I wonder if we could do a survey of K30 and K50 users with shutter count and if they have had aperture block or shutter failure. That way we can get an idea of what shutter count average we need to be concerned about these issues. Plus we could get an idea of the percentage of bodies that develop these issues. That will give us K30/K50 users an idea of when we may need to upgrade. I own 2 K30's and a K50. I will be happy to provide this information on my camera bodies. Adam I bet you can do this.

Post in this thread and/or take the survey here:

You can check your camera's shutter count here:
Check Camera Shutter Count and Manufacture Date
I`ve owned Pentax K50 for almost 3 years now, the cameara has 29 071 shutter actuations and I started having the problem with aperture block a year ago.

After 3 years of regular use (12k+ images), I have no issues with my K-30. I'm still running the v1.00 firmware.

I was, however, surprised to learn from the EXIF data that the camera had been manufactured over one year before I purchased it new from B&H. I would have thought the turnover would have been much faster.

...been thinking about this, and hindsight being a wonderful thing, think perhaps the serial number may have been useful in the survey in case there were problems with individual batches.
Also, could use (not misuse as suggested earlier) of the camera affect things. I haven't done much burst shooting, but have used HDR quite a few times. I don't understand the mechanism, so could be miles out in this, but as it is a mechanical failure (read a description of it but forget where) then it could be that the component does not reseat properly (or break?) if operated repeatedly, so for example a camera that has had a nice quiet life doing leisurely single shot work is less likely to fail than one used in burst mode / HDR or what have you. But that would only be if the aperture block was activated between shots in the burst / HDR and I don't really know.....

regards
Pete

I've completed the survey, stating that my K-50 shutter count is 4,267, manufactured 2014:11:04 putchased 2015:04:10. No problems with the camera at all. After buying mine I saw a K-500 (very similar to K-50) at a reduced price a few months later and purchased it for my daughter. I don't know her shutter count but she also has had no problems with her camera.

Sold my K-30 with about 7500 actuations and never had a problem. I did have a failure with my K-r, with less than that, though.

No don't change the survey midway. But after it is done, maybe all those who responded yes to a failure could add that info (even if you don't know who they are this could go out as a second request. Or that info can get added here and compiled later on.
Since I didn't think to include the manufacture date originally: My K-30 was manufactured in October 2012, not purchased until September 2013 (from Cameta Camera at what I thought was a closeout price -- if it wasn't for the sale I would have gotten a blue one instead).

K-50
Manufactured 2015-05-02
Bought March 2016
Shutter count 3845

I've had one instance of my first shot being black, and one of the shutter seeming to stick half way for a moment. Neither recently. I'm glad we have a two year warranty in Canada. It concerns me that the KS-2 and possibly the new K-70 have this same potentially faulty mechanism. Older flagship models like the K-3 cost more and don't come down that much in price outside the U.S., and the second hand ones are rarer.
