Ricoh deserves some credit for the firmware upgrade

I have been thinking about this since Ricoh announced the firmware upgrade for the K-50. This is a three year old body at this point and it was the lowest priced model in their line-up. Yet they have added KAF4 mount compatibility to the camera.

They definitely deserve some credit for doing that.

Just felt like saying that here.

Has anyone with a K-30 tried updating with the K-50 firmware? It seems dangerous, but it'd be valuable to know if it works.

Its good to see a change with the new firmware being rolled out, and the new lens compatibility being extended to older models. Lack of firmware updates has long been a source of complaint and frustration from Pentax users, so its a step in the right direction to add ongoing value to our cameras.

Well done, Ricoh.

Crossing my fingers for a K-5 series and K-30 fix next (p/v the hardware allows it). And after that, seriously, I think it would be reasonable to stop.

Regular firmware updates has been a RICOH brand cameras corporate value. IIRC Ricoh Imaging had planned to adopt this corporate value for the Pentax brand.

As I mentioned in another thread, the firmware update to support the HD 1.4x DA converter went as far back as the K-r when they released this firmware in 2014. They do seem to try to cover as many camera bodies as possible.. since it seems they want to sell you new lenses and accessories for your already bought camera body!

I am guessing that Ricoh is not totally aware ot how much time and effort making some of those updates will take, if at all , so they would rather have us pleased when the updates do come out rather than grumbling if they are delayed.

I kinda feel bad about buying a DAL 55-300 on here because I thought the firmware wouldn't come or I would have waited and bought the new lens. Maybe I will sell the DAL but that will be next years project.

It would be nice if they did give a firmware update for the K-30. That way, people with the aperture control block problem should be able to use the new KAF4 lenses (assuming more are coming) on the blocked body.
I think that would be true, wouldn't it?

^ Yes. Only for KAF4 lenses.

Everything else will need an aperture ring & a change in settings in the camera.
