I shoot high school basketball three nights a week for my newspaper. Gym lighting varies widely. I usually start by shooting on M and manual focus on 12 feet. If you're just behind the end line under the bucket, that puts your focus about five feet in front of the goal, which is good for shots of players driving or rebounding. After I get three or four in the creel that I know I can use, I try other things. About half of the gyms I'm in have light enough to shoot with a zoom. The others, I use an SMC-A 28mm at f2.8. Here is one I shot a couple of nights ago with it. 1/500. 6400. It's almost full frame. I often have to accept more grain than I want, but they wind up on newsprint in the end...
