@littledrawe where is this pair? I'd love to go shoot them with some big glass.

I'll send you a message here in a little bit.

Here is one from yesterday that I thought was interesting.

Schneider-Kreuznach ..

Hi all...
I have obtained a Schneider-Kreuznach tele--Xenar f5.5 360mm.. And I am unsure if I should keep this or put it up for sale.

How much would such a lens go for these days? It is a nice piece of glass, heavy but very well buildt....

after a couple of weeks of travel (not holidays) I have had a chance to go back and play more with the Tamron 200-500F5.6 along with adding a gimbal head for improved tripod use.

With an adaptor plate to set the lens back about 50-70mm and the added weight on my camera of a flash, I could actually achieve balance. The gimbal then made things really easy

below are some shots (the first 2 of them consequitive and the only shot taken of the subject) to show sharpness, and also how easy it was to get great focus while using the K7 and stock screen.

All shots taken using the AF540FGZ flash. All shots except for cropping and resizing are JPEGs right out of the camera (except the corrected PF shot at the end)

overall this is an impressive lens for the price, and as it came with the PKA adaptor it has functionality (P-TTL flash capabilities) that my other 500mm option does not have

and a 100% crop of the head

and now, what not to do, while the lens is capable, shooting into a bright backgrouond (flash to fill the detail) the lens produces incredible PF

but this took about 10 seconds in PSPX3 to fix

Nice work, Lowell--I'm guessing you're pretty happy with the set up.

Happy?

In a word, yes.

I have not yet looked at any sharpening etc, which would also help the images, as I said, these are right out of the camera JPEGs.

What I found surprising, and this is only the 2nd time really shooting with the lens, is how easy it is to aquire accurate focus, especially when there is no effort spent holding the dam thing up!

overall, the gimbal head I got, a Jobo Jr 3 cost as much as th elens, but I consider that to be a worthwhile investment. Although I have struggled for years with other tripod heads on my longish lenses, none have really offered the eas of use of a gimbal.

I think this would also help out with my 1000mm Celestron C90 scope, but that is the subject for another post.

what do you think of the Purple Fringe? Pretty amazing, and the PSPX3 purple fringe removal tool seems pretty effective.

the other thing that I suspect people don't appreciate is how shallow the DOF actually is. All these shots were done I think at F9. When you consider that the chickadee is only 4 inches from head to tail, it is surprising to see how fast things go out of focus,

Impressive Lowell.

Looks like a good setup and results will only get better as you get more familiar with it.

actually I am suprised how easy it is to work with. Considering this is my first time out with what I would consider suitable support, to be able to sit and move between subjects, take a single shot and pretty much nail focus has me pleased.

As you know, birding is tough. These were taken in my back yard, between bites of french cheese & baugette, and sips of pinot noir.

I didn;t even get out of my chair

what are you doing in PP, I note these are shot at ISO 2000. Although I love my K7 I don't think It can produce results like this at above ISO 800

It didn't freak me--I get as bad with the SMC 1000mm. I don't deal with it as well though: as far as I know PSE doesn't have that tool.

A dirty job but if that's what it takes to get the job done...

Splendid photos, Ramiot!

I keep looking at replacing PSP X3 with Photoshop, mostly because in some cases the CA removal took in PSP is not as good as it could be, but every time I think it is time to change, i do something like this in seconds and go back to re-think the situation again.
