New High Ratio Zoom

Would you be happy with a High-zoom ratio Zoom 30-350mm F5.6 20 elements in 5 groups for APS-C ?

United States Patent Application: 0100033838

It's an intersting design. I hope they build it. If they can produce it with a good quality I would think it would find acceptance. A 1 lens solution has a place.

I"ve often found myself using a fairly high ratio zoom even though I have plenty of primes for logistical reasons.

Thank you for this very interesting Patent.
But why do you say "for APS-C"? The only mention about APS-C is about the equivalent range starting at 45mm.
I guess it could also be the "new" 18-250mm equivalent for a FF camera!

Doesn't look like. 350mm, 13x points to 27mm and 60° points to 30mm image diagonal (APSC).

I must say that I find the 18-250mm range much mire appealing than the 28-350mm range. A superzoom really should cover the wide angle part as well. That's more like the 50-500 Bigma for APSC

That's why I think it could be the replacement of the 18-250mm (APS-C, so equivalent 27.5-380mm) but for a FF sensor.
30mm is a very strange "wide" angle for APS-C, and 350mm is not much longer than the very appreciated 50-300mm. So I don't the point for such a lens on crop sensors.
But maybe I just hope to much to find good signs about a FF body...

I didn't see the sensor size in the patent application but I guess I could have missed it.

Could this be a new zoom for the 645d system?

With a 1.2 million patent office backlog, it may be a while before this lens comes close to being produced

Not really. It can be produced with Patent Pending or provisional status.

if so this lens would probably be a fixed f/8 or it would be a MASSIVE chunk of glass

f5.6 doesn't make much sense for 30mm on aps-c or 24x36.

Edit: What sensor has an AOV of 60 degrees at ~ 30mm focal length?

The f/5.6 mention is related to the 350mm end. But there is no mention about the aperture for wide angle.

And about the AOV of 60 degrees at 30mm, I would say... all of them! Since the angle of view in not dependant of the sensor but the lens (this 30mm on FF is a 45mm equivalent on APS-C. )

The patent states:

QuoteQuote:
[0013](iii) an F-number of 5.6; and
[0014](iv) an angle-of-view of approximately 60.degree. at the short focal length extremity.
actually the sensor size will determine the AOV & FOV. A 30mm lens is a 30mm lens. Why do you think the AOV changes when you take FA 50mm f1.4 lens off of a film camera and put it on a K20d?

Maybe because when you use it on a K20D it becomes a 75mm equivalent... But still the lens can see with a 50mm AOV, just your (my) camera is a bit blind on the borders. ;-P

What do you think I said? It changes because the dimensions of the aps-c sensor is smaller than the dimensions of the 135 film format.
