HOYA Patent Application Numbers for the Past 8 Years

I thought some of you might find the above chart interesting. I bumped into it here, and it shows the number of patent applications filed by HOYA Corporation over the past 8 years or so. You can see a steep rise beginning around September 2008, with October 2009 being the highest month with about 27 applications.

If we consider that HOYA acquired Pentax on March 31st 2008, we can probably assume that the increase in patent applications thereafter is due to Pentax. But let's remember that Pentax also make endoscopes, intraocular lenses, surgical loupes, biocompatible ceramics, spotting scopes and binoculars (and maybe other stuff too), so the patents could be from any and all of these areas.

Great find Misere! It looks like Hoya is greasing the wheels at Pentax. Hoya is too successful and profitable to let Pentax keep underperforming. It takes money (R&D) to make money (sales of good products).

Can we expect a telephoto like the CIA has to read the number pad on a cell phone from low earth orbit?

Only if we expect a suitable launch system as well.

Remember, like most huge-arse Japanese conglomerates, Hoya has many fingers in many pies.

Would imagine that the medium format development might have contributed a bit to this. Agree its good to see this.

Well I just want Hollywood / TV Series type image enhancement software. You know the type where you can keep zooming in on an image and keep getting more and more detail. ;-)

That doesn't mean they have started to develop much more new ideas after the transfer of Pentax to Hoya. It just means that ALL Pentax patents were transferred ownership to Hoya who reissued them with new owner, just that.

It could also just be a shift in policy regarding patents such as obtaining additional patents on all different kinds of variations to prevent others from making slight variations and copying their ideas. Increased patent activities doesn't always translate into all of those innovations reaching the market and many of them might be patented with no intention whatsoever to bring them to market.

I agree that an increase in patent application filings does not necessarily indicate an increase in innovative activity, but your proposed explanation is not plausible. Miserere does not indicate in which jurisdiction these applications were filed, but even if they were in fact filed in a jurisdiction with a reissue procedure, a change of assignee is not a reason to seek reissue.

According to that page, in the USA.

The interesting thing is the patent seems to refer to the DA* 55mm f/1.4, but the filing date is 03-25-2010, which might mean this is a reapplication. On the other hand, I would have expected Hoya to reapply for the DA* 55 patent much earlier than that.

I have no knowledge of patent law, so I can't draw any conclusions.
