HOYA: 1 easy step to succe$$ - Make an iPad-friendly body

There are 2 million iPads ALREADY out there, and the bleedin' things don't have internal SD slots.

The first camera maker to market a consumer DSLR with WiFi is going to make hay. If it came with an iPad post-processing app, all the better.

You can also be certain that Lightroom and Aperture are under development for the iPad.

I am not a iPad user but I agree that some kind of Bluetooth/WiFi in-camera would be really handy. Right now when I make a few shots I have to look at them on the camera screen which is kind of painful, so I wish I could just open them on the computer without switching off camera, removing the card, inserting the card into adapter in the computer, navigating to the new photos, selecting and copying them ... or, inserting the usb cable, navigating... this takes too long, so long that I forget which settings I used and what I wanted to check for in the new shots.

It would be so much more convenient if I could just press a button on camera to send selected photos to the bluetooth device, or share the card through network via WiFi so I could access them right after they were shot... Sure it'd eat battery much more but I am ready to deal with this if I want fast access.

Really, so Pentax should go out of its way to compensate for a half-arsed "design" decision by a turtleneck-wearing, megalomaniacal hippie to exclude a simple, standard feature that's been around for, shit, well, years, in products from fridges to phones to GPS to bleedin' battery chargers.

So everyone's just meant to jump every time Jobs has another acid flashback, and shits out another novelty toy.

Never mind the fact that Pentax is Japanese, and the Japanese have about as much love for Apple as they do for porn that doesn't involve tentacles.

How 'bout Apple sticks an SD slot and USB socket in there? Nah, never happen. That's not revolutionary, apparently.

Oh, this'll be good.

Irregardless of how an interface is implemented, the most generalized version of this request is to have some type of tethered mode. The bodies currently in production do not support any type of tethered mode. The last bodies containing a tethered mode were the K10/K20 supported through the Remote Assistant utility, which we can all probably agree was not the strongest package available.

Rather than having Pentax support any external utility of their own, if Pentax were to return to having a tethered mode, publish a USB based API interface so that both third party and Open Source support packages could fill the void (even returning the previous Remote Assistant based interface) would be a start. I see no need for Pentax to supply the utility (or need to support their own PC based utility), since it will not be a differentiator that will compel anyone to buy Pentax. Wireless (Bluetooth/WiFi) interfaces are notoriously large power consumers, especially for battery powered devices, so USB would certainly be a reasonable first step.

Pentax needs to define an interface, publish it, then support it across all the future camera bodies. That would be the first, initial step.

I couldn't bother to read most of this thread without some brain cells dying, so please excuse me if this hasn't been mentioned already. This can be done via SD cards. Already, we have eyefi cards where the images are automatically uploaded via wifi connection. The idea that this will lead to Hoya's "succe$$$$$$$$$" is nothing short of laughable.

I like your inhibition to use the word 'ass' but then had no problem throwing the word 'shit' out. All in all, I do agree with your assessment.

Ars is likely the Ass equivalent in AUS, where the poster is from!

So, just think ass when you are reading it, haha.

Edit: to the original topic - pointless. how many photos would you want to store on an ipad with 32 or 64gb of available space? my ipod touch has 20 gigs of music alone. I kind of hate apple, but really like the ipod touch, sadly it is the best thing going. The ipad just seems well, weird. but maybe i should get one since (according to the commercials) i already know how to use it! I am a stupid sheep!

No way! We have far too many non-Australians around here who use 'arse' as a polite way of saying 'ass.' They make Australians look silly.

Apple has the Camera Connection Kit, pure unobtanium at the moment. One connector with a USB port and one with a SD slot. No need for a camera with WiFi.

There will never be Lightroom or Aperture for the iPad. The iPad is not a general purpose computer and Apple is not marketing as such. It is an information appliance.

The iPad already has USB. It's part of the Camera Connection Kit. You can use keyboards, USB headsets, etc. It will be interesting to see if someone writes a webcam driver. There is already a hack that allows the use of an external hard drive.

Actually, down here, "ars" is Latin for "art." Though I must admit, there might might be a connection, but that would indeed depend on the arse in question.

Of course you know how to use it! It does nothing, so if you're capable of doing nothing, then you're fully qualified to use it!

To be fair, at least the OP's come up with some sort of use for the iPad, which is more than what Jobsy did. Most Apple products are about 90% hype and marketing, and 5% functionality (the remaining 5% consisting of the blood of Chinese workers.) The iPad approaches near 100% hype.

What, exactly, does one do with an overgrown iPad touch? It's been called "revolutionary" and "amazing," but it does what, exactly? "Easy to use appliance" - an appliance has, as the name suggests, an application. Which would, in this case, be...errr...

Saying the iPad has USB is ridiculous from, y'know, a purely practical standpoint. If you can't plug a standard USB connector into it, then it has no USB.

I will now patiently wait for the flames from the Fruities, who claim that iPad would be perfectly suited to something like a photo editing platform, despite the fact The Wise And Holy Jobs himself has said that's not what the iPad is for.

Hey, we're quite capable of looking silly on own! Damn Septics.

Screw the paltry "2 million" iPad users. I say Pentax should focus the seven billion or so other people on the planet. Easier target to hit.

(Remind me why we're meant to drop everything and change how we live, or, in Pentax's case, their R&D, every time Apple vomits another piece of digital trinketry onto the marketplace?)

To confirm in NZ and Australia we say Arse (with the R pronounced) Ass to us is a donkey don't get me started on fanny!!!!

To stay with the OP I do think Wifi tethering is going to be a big feature in high end cameras to come especially with ADHOC support -eg to a device like an iPad However I do see it for use with laptops and home networks mainly or a way to quickly dump some photos to Fliker/Facebook when in a hotspot.

The iPad for 'me' is the perfect photo frame, lol I dont see it ever leaving the house.

Entertaining replies! Thanks guys.

I think the iPad is a piece of w@nk. I won't go near it. BUT, android tablets (a swarm of them) are on the way.

For photo reviewing and editing on-the-go, they will prove very useful.

I recall dpreview saying that the T2i/D550 is the most future-proof camera they've seen... add GPS and WiFi, and then I'd agree.

Camera bodies without wireless connectivity will seem antiquated in 2 years.

As a Brit living in HK with a lot of American friends, I am very familiar with arse/ass and happily even more familiar with fanny ;-)

Just don't tell an american that you're popping out to smoke a fag! :-o

Americans aren't that ignorant. In fact, our slang is so much better than British slang. Fag has nothing on BADONKADONK!!!

In all seriousness, do you actually think any of the ultra portables are capable of Photoshop/Lightroom editing on multitudes of 10-30MB RAW files?

No. Laptops, yes. The iPad, as people seem to have forgotten, is an over-sized phone. That's it. It's sole purpose to give people a means to buy apps. That, and to make phone ca- oh, wait. Never mind.
