How Rumours Are Born: New 30mm Prime Lens Coming Soon

The 31mm Ltd is out of stock at B&H and Adorama, and doesn't even show up in Amazon.com searches. Amazon.co.uk says it has 2 left. Amazon.de has no black ones and 1 silver one. Amazon.fr only has them through a 3rd party vendor. Henry's in Canada don't have any at all.

Just about all these stores have the 77 Ltd, so it's not like they're avoiding the FA Ltd line.

I've never seen the 31mm Ltd lens in such low/no stock at major retailers and am thinking this could mean Pentax will finally retire this classic piece of glass and roll out that mythical DA* 30mm that was on the roadmap so long ago.

It's not such a crazy idea, right?

Maybe it's because nobody can afford the FA 31 under the new pricing structure.

Nah - Pentax's newer, higher prices won't hurt sales. After all, people who just dropped $500 on a k-x usually have $1000 to blow on a lens.

Things are out of stock sometimes. This doesn't mean jack to be honest. Perhaps the factory that makes these lenses has just rolled out a batch of FA43s, and is now producing FA31s again. Or perhaps they are making DFA versions, or maybe they're busy producing a new FA limited. Or, or...

I also noticed this recently - and ordered my own FA 31 just in case. I've been wanting it for a while, and if they do stop producing it, I wouldn't be surprised to see the price double.

That'll just push me to procure the Sigma 30mm/1.4, which even at the current prices I'm more inclined to do.

A few Ebay "vendors" are offering the 31 Ltd.......i'd never pay the price but they're still available.

I'm with Clinton as far as the Sigma 30mm F1.4 goes, WAIT, I already have a copy!

I tried to cover all the vendors but I guess it didn't work.

$1200 is in my strike zone? NOT!

I'm now looking for the 43 Ltd, it seems that every vendor is asking close to $750 for this lens now!

What's going on ?

The prices of Pentax lenses are a bargain compared to what other manufacturers charge for their glass. Actually, I think Pentax glass is extremely cheap, considering what you get for the money. However, I'd welcome a new lens in 27-32mm range, f2-2.8 and which is smaller than an FA 31mm.

You have to be kidding!

I happen to love Pentax, but 1k vs $300 (it's what I paid) is ridiculos!

It would make sense because I believe that 31ltd is what has been stopping them for putting out other 30ish fast lens.
On the other side there has been few problems reported with AIV copies, so it may as well be that they are sorting this out.... in any case, we'll see

I haven't heard that the FA 31 is discontinued, but Pentax makes batches of them. This means that Pentax makes some, and when the stock is empty then make some more and when this stock is empty then, they make some more... and so on. The lens is not in regular production in the sense that Pentax makes it every month. Only the consumer zooms and the DA Star couple 16-50 and 50-135, and a few of the popular primes are in constant production.

I wouldn't be worried about stock is empty, it will take some weeks and then the lens is in stock again.

About price - the FA 31 has always been an expensive lens, but price haven't changed that much. Only a slight increase. It is regarded by Luminous Landscape as one of the three best AF lenses ever made, regardless of maker. The FA 31 Limited is Pentax answer to Leica and Zeiss lenses. Now considering the prices of Leica and Zeiss, the Pentax is actually a cheap lens.
