With price dropping like that south of the border, it is hard to patronize and support local retailers. Anyone from Canada still thinking of supporting camera stores and paying for the big price difference? Just wonder.....

Trust me, it's hard to want to buy local!

That's not true. There is tax, you're just not paying it.

Consumers owe the sales tax whether the retailer collects it or not. The problem for the state is it has no way to enforce payment when a consumer purchases from an out-of-state retailer, and lacks the resources to conduct audits on a large scale.

Which doesn't mean you won't get audited.

One of these days.

I stopped buying at my local camera store right here in the states because the bulk players (B&H, Adorama, Amazon) have severely undercut them in the body and lens departments. The "support the local economy" and "better service" gets flushed away once the difference exceeds >$100 (more like $50). I'll still go local for things like a camera bag...

I am more curious about the response from Pentax Canada - by doing nothing, it could only mean more sales in the US but nothing in Canada. Thus resulting in more frustrations from local camera stores not wanting to carry the brand.

Meh, I've been making all my big gear purchases (i.e. camera bodies and lenses) via the US for some time now. I'll only buy local if the prices are relatively close - which isn't very often nowadays.

I would suspect that the only reason people still buy from places like Henry's is because they aren't aware of the price differential between Canada and the US.

Warranty may be another item to think about, but to be honest - I've never had a problem with any of my bodies or lenses (ever) and am not fearful of buying from the US and importing.

P.S. This is a great price for the K-7. Totally worth every penny!

I was in the middle of pulling the trigger when the price went back up to around 798 now.... I wonder if the supply could be running low...

Well, I am crying over the price a bit. But i've already had ~5500 exposures out of the K7 and seven months use. And a bunch of very nice pics.

If it weren't for the warranty I would not buy local (Canada). With local stores policy history with the K20d (~1000 CAD when ~600USD) I will be going south to make my purchases in the future.

Clarkey, I thought about that too... However, with 1-year extended warranty on my credit card purchase added to the 1-year International standard warranty, it becomes a moot point. My K10D is already passed the half-way mark just after two-and-half years of use. By the way, the price at Adorama is matching BHPhoto's previous price point and remain at 763 while BHPhoto price has gone up to 798.

taking the 'real' cam this time :^)

As a jaded Sony owner, I saw BestBuy dump the A700 two summers ago, which spawned much speculation -- and that cam has still not been updated. If Pentax indeed swaps over in the autumn, it will be nice to be in a place where cause & effect can be measured!

In any case, I'm one of those who took the TriState/ebay deal last week, $745 net of cashback (it's still on as of 8pm tonight, 4 left at $808 w/ free US shipping). I missed the truck this evening, will pick up & examine carefully @ lunchtime tomorrow. This is the A700 that Sony should have made, I seldom shoot above iso1000 so the maligned Samsung sensor will serve me for years to come.

Yes, but we know that there is a new camera coming at the end of the summer/beginning of fall. We also know that in the past when the K10 and K20 got down to certain prices (around 700 dollars) it was because Pentax was getting rid of stock prior to announcing a new camera. My guess right now would be an announcement in mid August with a release in early September.

There are a lot of cameras being released this fall. The weak economy caused several companies to hold back during the spring and even skip participation in some large trade shows.

Sony: A7xx + hybrid cameras & maybe the A900 replacement
Olympus: E-3 & E-30 replacements + new m4/3
Canon: 60D + 1DsIV
Panasonic : GH2 + new m4/3
Nikon: D90 replacement maybe the D700 replacement
Pentax: K-7 replacement + mystery body

I would expect the smaller players to announce earlier so they can get good coverage in the media and have product in reviewers hands and on shelves before Christmas.

It is going to be a very busy Fall/Winter for reviewers.
