Bringing a camera across the border, whether you bring it with you when you return from the US, or whether you buy it online and have it shipped, it is not subject to import duties at all. Doesn't matter if you were in the US for 24 hours, 3 months, or never.
I have two people I work with that are CBSA BSO's and I'll ask them next time I see them where the exact rules are that they use to determine what goods can be imported under NAFTA.
But - from my experience, both bringing my first K10D across the land border with me and telling the BSO I had it with me purchased in the US, to importing a K20D and a couple of DA* lenses, I've NEVER had to pay import duties.
I've got a K-7 enroute from the US (EMI) and I'll see if there's any duties, but I'm not expecting any.
