The Pentax had the same optics as the Tamron 18-250mm, but some different details in build. I suspect that if Pentax went with the 18-270mm optics, they would build it without VC.
Mind you, I consider the 18-250mm to be superior to the 18-270mm, and maybe Pentax would consider the 18-270mmto be too much of a quality compromise.

And? An 18-250 weighs 1 lb, a 70-300 weighs just over 1 lb., a 50-135 weighs 1.5 lbs., and a 70-200 weighs 3 lbs. That's not a heavy lens for a 14x zoom.

It's the patent for an APS-C 25-350 superzoom lens, so certainly not DA*.

It would replace the DA 18-250 which went out of production. However, let me say that 18-250 is a much more useful range for an APS-C lens

Sure for a single lens solution. However, when coupled with a 12-24mm, a 25-350mm covers pretty much 99% of the generally used range for most people. Those two zooms and a few primes for specific or IQ purposes would go a long way of covering most of the bases for a lot of people.

I'm not saying it should be done or is a good idea. Just saying there could be sound reasoning behind such a lens. I think I would personally prefer something that starts a bit wider, just to reduce the amount of lens switching. A 16-90mm F3.5-5.6 with a 70-300mm F3.2-4.5.

A 25-350mm lens has a zoom range of 14x, which is far superior to the commonly accepted limit of 4x for quality lens, and thus IMHO incompatible with the DA* branding.

I'd rather prefer a 1,4x or 1,7x SDM-compatible rear converter so I could take extra focal length out of the DA* 50-135 and DA* 60-250 great lenses .

The entire idea of a superzoom is to not switch lenses...

One variant of the Tamron 1.4x is an SDM-compatible rear converter and it does work with the DA*60-250. Sometimes slow to lock focus but it does work.

Canon 35-350 was (I think it is discontinued) a L lens.

...yes, meaning it is expensive, quite heavy and painted white.
they also still make a 28-300 L with IS (also a 10x)

It's still a design compromise over the lower zoom ratios (and primes) obviously.
