New Tokina 16-28mm/2.8 is FF lens with SDM and WEATHER RESIST

Rather interesting info
ƒgƒLƒi[A35mmƒtƒ‹ƒTƒCƒY‘Ήž‚ÌuAT-X 16-28 F2.8 PROv‚ð³Ž®”*•\ - ƒfƒWƒJƒWatch
TOKINAƒjƒ…[ƒXbAT-X 16-28 F2.8 PRO FX

use google translator.

"experimental animals" are Nikon's (August, 6) and Canon's (September) FF cameras.

Features
1. Silent Drive-Module
2. High precision magnetic sensor for MUCH better AF performance
3. Dust and water rubber sealing
4. Low level of distortion with new generation of lens elements.

sounds like a lot of pentax/hoya patents/products
we all seen new SDM patent, i guess pentax has plenty of WR experience/patents and new hoya glass has been already out in sigmas

I'm not that good at reading schemes, but this new Tokina does seem to have a new lens formula. That said, this'll be only interesting if it ever translates into a DA* 16-50 V2...

Here's the DPReview Announcement

Interesting that the Tokina also uses the abbreviation SDM (as opposed to their own variant of USM, SDM, SWM), and while it promises "quieter ... and more precise focusing", there's nothing about faster focusing.
Sounds very similar to me...

NOT RIGHT.

GMR sensor (high precision magnetic sensor).
AT-X 16-28 F2.8 PRO FX is not a normal AF sensor rotation sensor is used as a control, a high-resolution focus GMR sensors mounted on the last drive unit. And allows more precise control of focus, as a result succeeded to speed up AF.

I hope Pentax releases it for their cameras. I looks like a good lens.

And guess who design & developed the SDM for this lens ?

Invalidates SDM detractors!
it seems to me - you are from Russia.

I hope this lens becomes available for pentax photographers, though I wouldn't be surprised if Pentax had a hand in it's production, it is most unusual for tonkina to suddenly come out with a WR lens.

Why? This isn't a very useful lens on APS-C...

Why? FF equivalent of 24-42mm, fairly wide to nearly normal. I think that many would like that.

And why is this lens to be preferred over ~17- ~50mm f2.8 lenses?

Well, that's a good question. 1mm?

I'd say at 16mm, the difference between 2.8 and 4 isn't big enough to be a deal maker... 12-24, 16-45, 16/17-50 lenses that we already have is a way more useful range on crop. IIRC in Canonland the 16-35/2.8 isnt as popular as the 17-55/2.8 or 17-40/4 that they have as alternatives for APS-C users. APS-H users might find some use for this lens though.

This lens might attract film users if it has an aperture ring though (or even if it doesn't, you can still use it with bodies that can control aperture). Hopefully Pentax did collaborate on this and that it's a signal of the FF model to come

Pentax involved with SDM & WR, tamron design optic formula, unlikely to be released on K mount until mid 2011.
It is TOKINA, not tamron. Also why do think it is they who developed optic formula?
16-50/2.8, 50-135/2.8, 35/2.8 all were developed by Pentax
