New Tokina 16-28mm/2.8 is FF lens with SDM and WEATHER RESIST

That's quite a big lens. And an expensive one for such a 24-42mm range, especially when the 16-50mm already cover a better range (24-75mm) for half the price and probably half the size and weight.

That said, I think Tokina hasn't released a single lens with the K-mount in the past 5 years.

If Pentax did work with Tokina on this one, Pentax will likely come up with its own variant in a few months... and it will cost 50% more! lol

They'll just do like they did in the past: Tokina will offer the lens for the Canon and Nikon mounts (and maybe Sony too) and Pentax will offer the lens for the Pentax mount only.

And if it's not a joint design, Tokina still probably won't make it available in the K-mouunt.

I mean, even the Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 (which was not the result of a cooperation between Tokina and Pentax) is only available in Canon and Nikon mounts! Such a bummer, this is a very nice lens.

I have seen the absence of the awaited DA* 11-16/2.8 as a FF sign. I hope, like you, that this is in that direction too.
I also hope that the pentax/tokina cooperation continues. Both companies needs new lenses in their FF line. And Pentax needs a body

I agree with others here to say it's a good sign to a coming Pentax 35mm full frame camera. I'm glad 3rd parties are starting to look toward WR as well.

While I'm not too fond of zooms, this lens would fit in nicely with my Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 EX DG for some wider range.

If Pentax does come out with FF, having a K-7 and the new camera would open a few interesting possibilities with lenses I have due to the K-7's 1.53x crop. The only DA I have are the 40mm Limited (might work FF?), and the DA 18-55mm that I never use.

Isn't Tokina owned by Hoya? I don't think they would stop working together if that's the case.

Yes, but since Pentax has no FF camera, the wish for it to be available in K-mount seemed puzzling to me.

What's interesting is that there have been a slew of lenses released for FF from many suppliers. The writing is on the wall. This lens is aimed for a market that will eventually move to FF at the expected (read: K-7) price levels.

This lens is the FF equivalent of Tokina's highly praised 11-16/2.8. I too think (or at least hope) that this is indicative of a coming Pentax FF.

A smaller zoom means the lens should offer much better performance (less distortion, more sharpness) than the 16-50 at the same focal lengths.

Because if/when Pentax goes FF, this lens can be used on both cameras and still be useful. Sure if you already have the 16-50, you don't care but can be a nice double use zoom.
