The next upcoming Pentax

Someone PMed me a link to this: apparently what the Pentax community wants to see in a future Pentax.

That one would certainly be pocketable with the pancake lenses!

Looks nice, but unfortunately there is no place to put the back LCD and SR mechanism...
Such slim camera would be doable as mirrorless, but then I have no interest...

I like the K-7 body. Pentax should keep that form.

I don't think LCD's are very thick and the SR mechanism is on the sides of the mirrorbox.

Looks badass.

And reminds me of Leica.

Very clever. Comments:

1) Not anywhere near enough room for a battery. That's the main reasons why DSLR's are fairly standardized (and why the PEN/Panny EVIL's have terrible battery life).

2) No built-in flash. That's a killer for a brand with only a couple of models.

Nice re-thinking of the light box, however.

I would get it just to let it cuddle up to my MXes.

I think Pentax should pursue an EVIL design as long as they have the resources to develop the DSLR line along with the EVIL line. Olympus did not, and they have all but abandoned the E-x line. All Olympus models will be mirror-less in a couple of years.

I would be surprised if Pentax could develop an EVIL line without pulling resources away from DSLR lens and body development.

If only it was an LXD, with interchangable viewfinders and all.

It could work. The solidity of the MX, with it's big viewfinder too, available in digital would be excellent.

They would have to clean up the design though. That mockup looks ugly, with all those lumps and bumps and knobs. Kind of like the Homer Simpson designed car, sometimes if you listen to user input too much, you can end up with a real dog. The film MX is a very simple, austere design. Any new bodies should keep a similar aesthetic.

After the M series and the P series (P30 etc), Pentax went through a period of absolutely horrible cheap and ugly looking product design (the SF* series, the Z series, even the MZ series if you ask me) from the mid 1980's until the digital SLR bodies came along. I hope whatever they do, they don't go down the path of ugly design again.

I like the handgrip on my K-7, I can hold it one-handed if necessary. Don't think I could with that.
I don't want it.

If you look at the PowerPoint, the width of the thing is ridiculous compared to the K-x. It's a good 1.5cm wider! Maybe that's where the power goes?

It reminds me of a Bessa more than a legacy Pentax body or Leica.

The old school shutter is fugly, and the non-recessed lugs for the strap? C'mon. There's been something called "progress' in the last decade.

Love the little LCD. That's trs cool. Same with the Fn and OK locations.

I love k-7 too. It's the smallest Middle range dslr ever(except high iso. but I use only 100~800
so it's best for me now!)

I agree.

Personally, I am no fan of retro look just for the sake of it.
