At the Photokina Pentax Germany admitted that the problem exists.
They can reproduce it.
They have forwarded the material to Japan.

the question is, is it present in the K5?

Falk said, that he will test it as soon as he will get a K5.

the results will play a major role in my decision to "buy" a K5 ... I will be graduating from college later this year and I'm planning on getting it as a gift from my parents the last squeeze before I start paying myself for Pentax goodies

So, here's a question: would you rather buy a camera in which someone has found a particular quirk, or a different camera which certainly has quirks which are not yet discovered?

Perhaps not the right question, Matt.

Any complex device will certainly have yet-undiscovered quirks, including K-5.

The only question to answer here is the extent to which the known quirks have an impact on your photography. Each of us will answer that for ourselves.

Falk - thank you for doing the testing, it's great to have some kind of study documenting what other people have anecdotally reported.

I guess my question is, along with all of the other variables (hand held shake, lenses loosing resolution when stopping down) :

How big is the resolution loss compared to everything else?

I agree but IMO mattdm still has a point. Other camera may be clean of it or even worse but pentax takes it all.
Easy enough IMO

Please had somebody got repaired the "shutter induced blur" problem which was discussed for K-7 but occurs also for K-x? I’m interesting if some service center was able to repair it. Maybe it could be solved by replacing the shutter unit for newer one from K-5 or K-r.

The problem is observed as a image motion blur ( but it could seem to somebody as out of focus blur ). This blur occurs only for shutter speed in range cca 1/30 – 1/125 sec with peek cca 1/80 sec ( where blur is highest ). This blur is caused by shake from shutter and could not be eliminated by stabilizer (SR). Very unpleasant is that the problem could be avoided only by NOT using shutter speeds in range cca 1/30-1/125. It occurs for handheld shots but also if shooting from standard quality tripod with mirror lockup !!, exceptionally heavy tripod could partly eliminate the blur.

Major deal breaker. I was considering a K-7. Hope this doesn't apply to the K-5. How about mirror slap being responsible? One more reason for going mirrorless.

Read the report. It's not mirror slap. The K5 was tested; it's fine. The K5 often has a different problem, though.

A flash is fast enough to eliminate the blur. If it is the dominant light source.
Sorry if it's bad form to resurrect a thread in this manner, but I had a read after noticing this phenomenon in my images and was curious about this comment.

How does the use of flash allow shutter blur to be eliminated? The max sync speed seems to be well within the region of extraneous blur and the added weight doesn't seem great enough to eliminate the effect.

I really appreciate the articles, by the way. Wish this sort of rigorous, informed testing was more common.
