The non OS version, I remember well, wasn't exactly known for its performance.

Agree.

Considering how well the DA 200mm works with the older manual focus Pentax 2xL converter, that would be a useful addition. I've also used the DA 200mm with the 1.7 AFA with good results. Tells me that the results with the DA 200mm + SDM dedicated 1.4x would be quite good.

One issue though - no tripod collar. Would become even more of an issue with a TC attached. Ron (brandrx) put out a note on the other forum on a compatible Canon removable ring (made for a 100mm lens). I haven't tried it but it looks like a good solution.

I think they should make both a 1,4x and a 2x. While for the 300/4 the 2x could be a challenge for the AF to function quickly, it would be great on the 200/2,8. The 200/2,8 with both rear converter could be a much more useful lens, like the 300/2,8 with rear converters is on FF.

no kidding. As a guy who presently owns a Pentax-A* 300 f/2.8, and a Pentax A* 600 f/5.6, the current pentax long end seems like a bad joke. While I understand that apparently long fast lenses such as these have become unaffordable to manufacture, I'm not sure WHY this is true. Somehow in the 21st century we are no longer able to do what we did 25 years ago. So much for progress.

Indeed it may turn out that it is unnecessary. The K5 is producing satisfactory photos at ISO's not even on the scale of models of a few years back. With Macro work, if the crop is to be less than 50% with the end result such as a photo to load on a web site not larger than the typical screen, you get better results by trading noise for increased depth of field as the noise won't show. Consequently, 'buying' some depth of field by running the ISO up to 12800 or so
is acceptable.

If the EV values on the low end can be incremented downwards a few stops,
and improved AF technology can provide happy results with effective f stops
slower than about the bottom of f/6.3) then we simply don't need the fast optics.

Stated another way, if we can get good photos one day soon with f/16 at low light levels, then the availability of F/2.8 lenses is irrelevant.

I know there are die hards here who insist that they can't live without a FF sized sensor as well.---to which I say-----I just want a good photo. If pentax can deliver the superior photo using an ever smaller, ever mor sensentive choie.
the so be it.

Yeah but they still lack focal length. Nothing past 300mm made by Pentax currently. Everyone always wants more!

I would certainly buy a high quality 1.4x. I want to step up in quality from my DA55-300 to a DA*60-250 but the loss of the extra 50mm is an issue for me with airshow photography.
300mm max on a zoom is ideal for these events but most of the time I don't need the extra reach so a smaller lens with a 'booster' for those few times when I need it would be a great combination for me.

So,Pentax Germany and US are fighting for the Converter.
It is ready for production but Pentax Japan told us they do not need it to bring the converter, cause in Japan nobody want it and the price will be to high for the consumers.
Pentax could bring the 1,4x in high quality for 450€.
But,it looks like it will never come.
Nobody will pay for high quality
Thatīs sad.
Best regards,Andy
Even at $450, the price-tag makes sense when compared with the price of any DA* SDM line-up lens, priced more than twice if not thrice that price!

High quality 1,4x converter at $450, ok for me.

I'd Buy one... 1.4x or 1.7x, probably prefer the 1.4x tho.

agreed. In the past pentax has made some pretty cool lenses in silver trunks, but a fast prime significantly longer than 300mm is called for....

Well that was known already.
Yep, that is the prototype.
And yes, we're still waiting for it. You may want to read the whole thread to know more about the story.
