I expect there will be a lot of "That's way too much money for a TC" in response to this.

Assuming they adjust aperture, focal length, auto focus for both SDM and non-SDM lenses...
For a top quality weather sealed 1.4x TC? I think $550 is fair.
For a top quality weather sealed 1.7x TC? $650.

I would like a 2x SDM TC at about 200 USD to use with my Sigma 70-200 f/2,8. I will accept the quality a 200 USD TC will give me. If it gets more expensive i simply wont buy it.

I already own Pentax's 1.5x SDM supporting TC... it has "Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x Teleplus SHQ - Made in Japan" written on the side

We know Kenko is Hoya which we know is Pentax so... whats the big deal?

It doesn't have the smc coatings, and it's not weather sealed.

Mostly, I don't want to see yet another mediocre teleconverter hit the market. I want to see some fully supported pro level teleconverters, and I'm willing to pay more for pro level gear. If you're looking for non-pro level gear, there's plenty of TC options for you right now.

+1

But then again I don't have some off the glass you want to use it with. (how is the 600mm/f4?) With an expensive TC there should be some new pro-glass.

In addition to what Clinton said, it is no longer in production. plus, it is only speculation that Kenko is owned by Hoya. It is more likely that some Hoya people own private stock in Kenko (and/or Tokina). However, that is apparently the extent of it.

Are we allowed to demand a 1.7x? That would be my choice.

The silicon sealings are cheap. SMC coating can't affect on price drastically.

The outside price for 1.4x ТС WR should be not above $350-400.

That would be a nice price. I gave it another thought and if this 1,4x WR TC works great with Sigma 120-300mm/f2.8 then I will buy it! It gives me a 168-420mm/f4 fast and long tele lens and that is a great thing to have. Even at a bit hi price

Technical question here: Would a SDM TC also support the HSM focus system in Sigma lenses? (Sorry if it's a dumb question)

In theory not better or worse than a sigma tc with a sigma Lens or a pentax tc with a pentaxlens.

Since an SDM TC would have to cover the full KA3 mount, Sigma HSM would be covered by implication.

What I'm concerned with is this notion of a generic high-quality converter. Aren't the best TCs matched to a low number of lenses? Is it not wrong to expect excellent performance from a TC that isn't tailored to a specific subset of lenses?

It's also got to have electronics in it to adjust the aperture and focal length before handing it back to the camera.

In theory that could also be handled with firmware, just checking in the TC in the quickmenu of the camera.

I just found yesterday this site and they have also some tests with a TC
Sigma 300 mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM APO review - Image resolution - Lenstip.com

And this one in Canon section with a type II TC, so new TC should be better.
Canon EF 300 mm f/4L IS USM review - Image resolution - Lenstip.com

There is a good way for using a TC and maintain good image quality.
