It's a K-x killer. If the price is similar, the K-x will have a hard time to sell. So the K-r will probably be the updated K-x with the 14Mp sensor and probably a bunch of goodies thrown in like AF leds.

Is it? Just because of the AF point indicators and the 1080p movie? Or it's about the badge?

The D3100 will start at around 700 dollars, not sure what it will be with the Kit lens. I think that it is targeted at the T2i. I doubt it will hurt Kx sales that much (although Pentax could release an update) since it will be priced a couple of hundred dollars more than the kx.

At Amazon the kit (D3100 + 18-55 mm kit lens) sells for $699 (€599) and the two lens kit (D3100 + 18-55 + 55-200) sells for $950.

In the Netherlands you can buy a K-x with 18-55 kit lens for €479 and in the two lens kit for €570 (18-55 + 50-200) or €695 (18-55 + 55-300). In the Netherlands the Rebel T2i (550D) is sold for about €100,- more than the D3100, but the 1000D (which DPreview used as a comparator) is significantly cheaper.

All in all the folks at DPreview are enthousiastic about this new Nikon, but I have to admit that I am not impressed by its features. The K-x is a lot cheaper in the Netherlands and I do not think that the extra money spend on the D3100 will get you really better pictures.

So, now we have to wait to see what Pentax has done with this sensor and what kind of features we will see on the K-r model. I am excited!

Are they using the same sensor used in the Kx but with a higher MP count?

3 fps and HD video... K-x's time is close to end. But, I see now only old D3000 with new sensor, HD mono video and LV.

I've tried to make movies with D5000 - it's the task for masochist, to say honest...
It seems to me D3100 has AF in video mode and it's good sign.
But how good this AF?

Anyway, I have 2 year old video camcoder with MPEG4 720*576 (stereo!!!) with AF and it's enough for my video fun. Very comfortable and quick work.

To say honest D3100 is nothing interesting as DSLR

Nikon D3100 Key Features
14.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor
3.0" LCD monitor (230,000 dots)
Image sensor cleaning (sensor shake)
11 AF points (with 3D tracking)
IS0 100-3200 range (12800 expanded)
HD movies (1080, 720p or WVGA)
Announced: Nikon D3100 and Nikkor 85mm, 24-120mm, 28-300mm, 55-300mm lenses | Nikon Rumors

Marrketing is everything.

Sony has sort of announced, Nikon has officially announced, so maybe Pentax will follow very soon.

i sure hope Pentax introduces the Kr and K5 with excellent performance and specs AND please add some new lenses!!!!

Pentax 55-300 at amazon has gone up to $380. Nikon's new 55-300 is about the same price but could be lower at street prices.
Then nikon 24-120 looks very interesting, although the older version was sort of soft

Are Pentax lenses still price competitive? it's getting less and less so.

Well the K-x does 4.7 FPS and has a shutter that goes up to 1/6000 instead of the 1/4000 of the D3100, so part from the better video performance I do not see a benefit for the D3100. Unless it takes amazing pictures of course, after the reviews of the NEX-3/5 of Sony I am curious what Nikon can squeeze out of this sensor. The IQ of the NEX-3/5 at higher ISO's was not that impressive, but we all know what Nikon has done with the previous Sony sensor in the D90 and more so, what Pentax has done with that same sensor in the K-x.

It will be interesting as the K-r -according to the rumors here- will be priced around €650 and that's about the same price as a D3100!

The D3000 was sold at rock bottom prices lately (below 500$) and the D3100 is the direct successor. Price at launch and MSRP are not indicative of where the camera will compete.

As a T2i competitor, it would lose badly as the T2i is better specified anyway. The rumored D95 should be the T2i killer.

As far as I can see the K-x is beaten on most specs except fps (who knew that Pentax could lead on this parameter!) and some controls like auto bracketing and maybe also viewfinder size. The K-r should fix all that and become again the best entry level DSLR.

I don't see how. Please do explain (this is serious question, not trying to argue). Maybe I didn't get something.

it's more about specs and to a lesser degree, performance, at least to the folks buying at this level.

the D3100's AF in video and quiet shutter mode is interesting.
Kx could use help in that department.

i hope HoyaTax did its homework.

if the Kr will be spec'd less than the D3100, may god help pentax

Less.... K-r will be close to K-7, a bit above, a bit lower, new generation of DLSR,
but higher than K-x in all ways. I think it will be some kind of "come back" of K200D with new look at DSLR. I hope...

well, OGL, if this Kr is the k200 reincarnated and highly improved, i'm lining up for one. my wife has the k200 and she loves it.

i like my kx but wish for some of the features in the k200.
The rumored AA batteries with option for Lithium is another great feature if it's true.
