By the way... Only 1 camera on/after Photokina - K-r.

I would definetly say K-x, not K-7, for 2009.
No, K-x is K7/645D tech downfit to another sensor/body.
K-x is an excellent camera, especially for the price, nothing new here, but the tech is K7/645D.

I agree with some of what you say, but do not dismiss digital stabilisation. If it helps get another stop of usable sharpness out of a scene I am all for it.

K-x already has lots of silly photo modes and image processing so pet face detection is not unlikely. The lower-end DSLRs must appeal to people moving up from point'n'shoot so any features they are used to that are suddenly missing become negatives. Maybe not for us, but consider the market.

P.S. I wonder will the face detection work on reptiles?

Is this just a guess or do you have inside info? Because all rumors so far indicate that a new top model K-5 as well as a model between K-x and K-7 (K-r) will be presented during Photokina.

It's a guess based on inside info.
I know that K-r will be. Strangely the announce date was said to be in October

Btw, K-r will have AF beam light helper (like in K-7)

Unfortunately this seems the trend.
I'd be really happy if there were two categories in DSLR market:
Video enabled with all modes, scenes, blink/smile/crap detection
and than normal, still picture camera at least on semi pro level
I have a good deal of sympathy for this view, but it would be commercial suicide for Pentax to produce such a specialised product, in view of their limited number of models. SoCaNikon could afford to undertake this kind of specialisation though.

I don't understand the antagonism to video. There is a sense in which Sony missed the train when they didn't include video in their SLRs. Clearly it does not detract from taking decent photos and doesn't detract from good high iso, depending on the sensor. People don't look at photos when they buy a camera, they look at specs. How many FPS? How many megapixels? Does it have iso 25600 (even if it looks like crap)? Pentax can't afford to fall too far behind in these things, just to please "the faithful."

I rarely use video on my K-7 but I was glad to have it when I went snowboarding last winter. Perfect for some private movies to enjoy with friends and family, with an outstanding quality, light years away of what I'm used to with P&S cameras.
Really, if you don't want it, don't use it. It's here to stay.

It would be very easy to make, though: Just replace the mode dial with one that only has M, X and B positions, and cripple the menu system to hide all the gimmicks

(I fact, I just came up with a brilliant business idea: A "camera tuning garage" where you can get your mode dial replaced and your firmware hacked and replaced with a minimalist firmware with a pure basics menu Maybe you can also get your K-x logo replaced with "MX-D"?)

If I wanted video I would go out and buy camcorder. If I would want proper video I would go out and buy semi pro video camera. But I don't want it. Never liked video-ing things. I love stills on the other side. So for me video feature is a gimmick I don't need and will never use. I understand they have to put it there to be able to compete but I would be nice to have a choice of camera without it IMO.....
That's why (and colour rendition is another very good reason) why I'm still hanging on to K10D and considering buying another as a back up....

True, but it's just the latest in a long line of features that some folks never use. As for me, I never use any of the automatic exposure settings on my K10, nor any of the digital filters, nor the built-in flash, nor the auto white balance, nor about 7/8 of the other settings available on it. I could even do away with auto-focus and be perfectly happy.
This is much like buying a car: you choose the one that you want/need but you also have to take whatever comes in "the package". You want electric seats? Well, that will come with a sunroof, fog lamps, Bluetooth, and all of those things that you are not willing to pay for, but then you pay for them at the end of the day.
Same goes with cameras: you want better AF and better ISO handling: that will come with video; you can't have either - you'll get both whether you like it or not.

Yep. You're exactly right. We can't stop these changes. The only thing we can change is our attitude towards them.

I had a similar opinion as you, but I've changed my mind after I saw some movies taken with DSLRs. Now I wouldn't buy a camera without a video mode anymore. I see no reason to refuse it as long as it doesn't have a negative effect on the IQ of the photos or the price of the camera.
