I don't know about the technical aspects of it, but don't rangefinders tend to be on the smaller side anyway? Also, Leica didn't have to worry about putting an autofocus mechanism in the M9, which I'm betting helped keep the size down.
This said, I wouldn't mind a FF converted Pentax MX, even if they did have to sacrifice autofocus
