The Leica M9 is FF, 18MP digital and yet extremely compact. Compact and FF digital can be done. Add a pentaprism onto a M9 body and it would still be pretty tiny.

A digital Pentax MX, retaining the original dimensions, should certainly be doable in FF or APS-C , I reckon.
I don't know about the technical aspects of it, but don't rangefinders tend to be on the smaller side anyway? Also, Leica didn't have to worry about putting an autofocus mechanism in the M9, which I'm betting helped keep the size down.

This said, I wouldn't mind a FF converted Pentax MX, even if they did have to sacrifice autofocus

I don't know why you quoted me, I was just responding to someone else. I'm excited about the K-5 and will likely buy it right when it comes out.

The funny thing is people who don't know much about cameras fall for it. A few days ago I was watching Diggnation (a podcast for those who don't know) and Kevin Rose was all excited about the D3100 -> he previously owned a 5D MKII.
The problem is that *all* digital camera companies and most consumers are now in this vicious cycle. Gearheads always want to upgrade to the latest and greatest. It's not as if their previous gear stopped working or that the camera was the limiting factor in their photography, but they, but they nevertheless always want the latest stuff.

Sorry, its not really aimed at you. Just so everyone knows, the "**********" . the stars correspond to the number of letters of a particular item related to the K-5.

Well I'm guessing since you're dropping hints you don't want to come out and discuss this feature in depth. If included, do you think it will be a useful feature or more on the gimmick side?

Wasn't there a rumor about "something new with the viewfinder" before the k7 was released as well? Based on a Pentax patent or something.

A hybrid EVF/OVF? Would be really cool if it's possible.

Leica M's have a flange distance of only 27.80mm, Pentax has 45.46, one of the longest... so Pentax has it more difficult to build thin camera.

i cant get drawn back into this all over again, just insures disappointment.

besides, the thing i would care about most in a hybrid viewfinder, a real-time histogram, is impossible with a mirror blocking the sensor. none of this translucent nonsense please.
