If I don't my K-7 now, I will likely get the K-5. I will likely get the K-5 when the next new model comes out after that next year or a year after.

You're correct - it's the A850 body only for right around $2000. Stunning viewfinder but pretty significant noise over ISO 800. I'd consider it if I could mount MF Zeiss or Voigtlanders to it without an adapter. That being said, it's hard to imagine how Pentax users can request, nay, demand a FF camera for $1600.

Well crap:

Now I'm *really* tempted by the A850. Haha.

I would be willing to pay D700 or 5DmkII prices for a FF from Pentax. Rather than the cost of selling and buying everything over in Nikon or Canon. But if I am forced to do it I will, in the spring of 2011

voigtlander lenses are my favorite, but I wouldnt spend money converting them to sony mount to use with the noisy super high mp count a850, Id get them straight in nikon mount to use on a low noise d700 instead.

Heheh, a Canon sensor in a Pentax. It wasn't all that long ago that Pentax (and Nikon) users used to trash Canon sensors because they were CMOS and gave plastic-looking skin - only CCD could give the image quality that we demanded. How times have changed.
Thanks for bringing that up because back in around 2005 I had argued that Pentax was ridiculous for wasting time developing CCD cameras (i.e. *ist). I pissed off a lot of people when I stated that CMOS was the future and Canon had already perfected CMOS technology (i.e. D20). Yes, I was called all sorts of names, including TROLL.

It did not seem to matter that I just happened to work for one of the leaders in CMOS imaging devices, at the time.

Whatever.

I doubt this if comparing at similar "print size" and not looking at pixel level.

Edit; I mean if corrected for ½ stop gain when removing mirror in a55

You're talking non-sense, you haven't put any study to back up your saying. And I never heard of any.

The fact is that even Raw files are very processed in camera, all of them. DNG specifications for exemple states that the hot pisel correction shall be included in the file.

Apart from being an engineer specialist of the subject and working for one of the DSLR makers I doubt anybody have a clear picture of the performance of the competition. And in that case, such a specialist would not make comments as you did.
Just because you don't like what you read, it does not mean I am talking nonsense. Like I previously stated, if you want to argue this, it means you have not experienced long exposures on the equivalent Canons and Nikons.

DYK, that almost every astrophotographer who uses a DLSR, uses a Canon or a Nikon. Why? Because they allow for long exposures and have relatively low noise when compared to the Pentax K20D or K7.

You will be hard pressed to find an astrophotography site that compares the Pentax brands. Additionally, there is a reason why almost every astronomical software tool supports Canon (and some Nikon) almost exclusively. Canon and Nikon have listen and enhanced their cameras to support this small group since the very beginning. Too much amp glow? Canon fixed it almost immediately. Pentax doesn't even understand this group!

Anyhow, I digressed and I don't really care to argue this!

I am going to borrow a D90 and give it a shot tonight and see what it's like for long exposures. I REALLY like the Pentax body but have been craving a different sensor in it. I have high hopes for a K7 build with a better sensor in the K5. That will have me upgrading in short order. If it's a disappointment I'll head for a FF as that seems to be what I am looking for.

Didn't mean to stir the pot. I'm by no means a brand loyalist and just want a camera that gives me a confident feeling all around so i'm not creatively diminished while worrying about hardware issues. K7 delivered with best build quality for the price and reasonable sealed lenses but the sensor is becoming a disappointment for me. If they nail the sensor and keep the other attributes I'll be totally satisfied. The AF performance with 1.10 is fine. It was outperforming a 5d m2 that I played with in a low lit building anyway before that update. I'm routing for Pentax to get it done right.

Mine has taken all that Afghanistan has thrown at it so far with a few quibbles. Hot pixels which seem to be more an sensor issue that a temperature issue as I had previously thought now that I have had a opportunity to use it in reasonable weather. And live view/movie mode overheats if it's around 90 degrees or hotter.

I have 4 Canon's none of which are DSLR's. I am here because Pentax could offer me a "real" metal camera and lenses for significantly less than a D300s or 7d with equivalent glass (or those primes that i'm slowly collecting). A FF was VERY appealing but I was not impressed with the 5d and the D700 is a bit pricey being that the body cost what my K7 and two DA*'s cost.

Lee
Contrary to what some in this group think.... all I care about now is seeing what the Pentax K-5 offers. The news of this camera came as a surprise to me but I don't yet know if it is a pleasant one. The K-7 was a complete disappointment b/c it had essentially the same sensor as the K20D.

I still have a huge collection of PK lenses but if I must to use my Canon 5D for 1/2 of what I photograph (re: long exposure photography)... I might as well dump Pentax for good. We will see if Pentax has learned a few lessons.

I don't want to call you a liar but I find this statement highly suspect for two reasons:

1. No advantage? How about the fact that DFS is optional on the 7D and the K20D it is not. That is one huge advantage!

2. I own the K20D and I know that a 5 minute exposure results in quite a few hot (at least 15 - 25 consistent but I never bothered counting) pixels and even more noise (when viewing the RAW image).

3. I own the Canon 5D (which is inferior to the 7D) and long exposures not only do not require the DFS wait time but the end results are vastly superior to the K20D.

4. See this link for 7D long exposures: How does the 7D handle LONG exposures? Pentax comparison...: Canon EOS 7D / 50D - 10D Forum: Digital Photography Review

All I want is a K5 with the noise and DFS issue fixed!

Not if they keep the K7 body size; loss of controls was one of the "features" of the smaller body.
But is that what most of you want? A smaller body? Is that what is important?

That SR switch (on the K20D) is extremely useful (especially when doing a lot of tripod and/or low light work).

Having to navigate through menus makes this feature vary consumery (invented word) rather than semi-pro..

In fact, aside from my well known beefs about the K20D, all other aspects of this camera make it nearly the perfect camera. Obviously, I can't speak for others but I regularly use every control on my K20D. Yes, including exp. latitude and RAW. The Flash button is the only one I hardly use.

PhotoAcute stacks RAWs.

It reads the raws, either native as DNGs, or after using the DNG converter when found in its PATH. It outputs linear DNG which is a DNG file three times as large as a mosaic DNG (very similiar to what DxO does except that ironically, DxO doesn't read DNG). But other than size, the stacked result looks and feels like a raw file. I.e., I don't have to fiddle with color rendition prior to stacking. PhotoAcute takes this literally and displays awful colors in its preview process with no negative impact on the result though. PhotoAcute and FocusMagic are two tools everybody should have tried.

As for the ability to do all this in camera, please read the corresponding LumoLabs article. It says something about alignment in Photomatix too.
Good to know. I have been growing weary of the limitations with Photomatrix for HDR work.

You don't necessarily need dedicated buttons everywhere to make a camera professional:

I really appreciate the smaller, quieter, more responsive K-7, although there's certainly a place for bigger cameras with a bunch of dedicated buttons.

The problem is with Pentax: they're listening to us.
We made a lot of noise about the K10D/K20D being big. So, they made a smaller body (unfortunately, some buttons had to go). Now, it's not good - not good at all...
By some strange logic, we'll downplay every advancement they're making, while amplifying every "fault". We "know" the K-7 is just a K20D, which is exactly the same as the K10D, which is just an *istD on steroids. In other words, the "K-5" - subject of this thread - is just an *istD on steroids; nope, not much of an upgrade...
It's hard being Pentax...

P.S. If someone from Pentax is reading this: keep up the good work! And... you don't have to listen to everything we say
