ePHOTOzine: K-7 vs. D90 vs. 550D

A threesome comparison test. Subjective of course, but the result is probably not what people here would like to think.

I think this is the best review of a Pentax camera to date as it shows how bad they deal with metering/dynamic range. It's the same reason I hate my K100D and K20D. I'm always trying to compensate by dialing in +0.3-1.0 EV. I might as well forget about a sky and horizon shots or a bird in flight in Av mode as it's just going to fail so I have to switch to Manual.

I love the build quality and ergonomics but I'm beyond frustrated with underexposed shots like in this review. It is for this reason I don't recommend Pentax when asked by friends. I hope what ever new comes out doesn't have this same pitfall.

This is the reason I kept my K-20 D and bought a K-x instead.

Lets hope the K-5 changes things the next time they do a review of these three brands and there upgrades.

iso 100 not available????why not?
they have activate the shadow correction?so the camera will high noise in shadows at high iso?
the pictures are so dark?my k-7 never, works very accurate..........
looks a little like the typical german testreports
only the skyproblem issometimes a point.

I'm curious as to how they tested these. I didn't see it in the introduction, but making claims about contrast in jpegs? These are all changable settings. And no ISO 100 on the K-7??? The K-X starts at 200 but has an expandable mode to 100, but the K-7 has native ISO 100.

I'm only halfway through test 2 but I can already tell this isn't a very well done "comparison".

A rather basic and error riddled comparison. I dismissed it immediately.

I hate it when the review cannot even setup the camera correctly. The Pentax K-7 has no ISO 100 ?!? (turn off expanded DR) it only shoot 4 RAWs before choking ?!? (turn off CA/distortion correction).

yeah reviewer clearly didn't go to much trouble with the k-7 the iso 200 thing the most obvious one but the continious shooting was woefully innacurate - i easily get 15-20 raw images before the buffer fills and frame rate drops

and of cource the pentax has noticiably worse image quality - strange that dpreview's tests showed that there was very little difference between the k7 and d300 iq in raw captures or perhaps the d90 is better than the d300 now

and the auto white balance lol penalised for correctly picking the dominant light source and i'm not sure the review understood custom white balance

biased reviews like this do annoy me - and to think people will make purchasing descisions based on sucha load of trollop

Another useless review it seems.

I don't mind if people find fault with the K-7 is they test it properly, but this kind of review, by being very inaccurate, is worse than useless really because it propagates incorrect information.

As well as the ISO and buffer errors straight away, it seems a test of standard JPEG settings and kit lenses more than anything else.

I don't think it is biased, but rather they are just clueless. The shadow/highlight correction explains the lack of iso 100, and most likely the lens correction was ON for the AF-C to stop after 2-3 shots. Also, I am certain the iso tests were done with jpeg's with what ever Jpeg parameters.

This test clearly shows, If you can't chew gum AND walk at the same time, the K-7 is not for you.

Best review to date? It's an error-riddled mess, that does not touch on 'useability' - build quality, feel, ergonomics, sound etc etc. And can't get basics right.

At the risk of generalising, your exposure problems sounds a lot like user error on the face of it.
The meters are very accurate if you know how to use it. It's all relative to mid-tone grey...

fully agree, no iso 100!!! if the rest of the test has been done with such attitude the results are simple to understand
