24mm corresponds to the classic street shooters film 35mm.

28mm corresponds to the true normal that Pentax had properly as 43mm.
I agree, both these focal lengths are very useful on APS-C (the 31mm is pretty close to the true normal, though).

As for 135mm, it's very good we have a nice 10mm macro, but a distance lens optimised for portraits with at least f/2 largest aperture is missing. This would be perfect for stage / runway work. If it's a larger FA77 I would be very happy.

The 10mm macro? Now that would be an interesting lens

Yes, a fast 135mm would be nice too - I don't object to that.

Ha! Good catch!

And by runway I don't mean aircraft.

Unless Pentax surprises us with completely new lenses for a small-mount mirrorless, here's what I think may come:

- Release of the already shown 645 ultra wide
- A fast and inexpensive lens in the 30-35mm range. They really need this.
- The mythical super tele (from the road map)
- A Pentax-designed super zoom (or "almost super", e.g. 18-105)

In addition, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a relaunch of "the three amigos" in WR version with quick shift.
That mythical tele never was on the road map unless is was another 300mm lens because the line went through "super tele" and 300mm. Plus, the roadmaps only went to 300mm. If there was anything longer for 35mm, it was "off the map" so to speak.

Pentax lens roadmap updated | PentaxLife

Edit: There was on various Road Maps a SDM TC lined up below the DA* 300mm and a DA* 30mm SDM.

It doesn't matter, 300mm is at the top of the page with a line running through both of them. Anything longer would be off the page to the right. So if Pentax was working on a longer lens, it was "off" the page. However, it was at the bottom. They added that and dropped off the SDM TC and the DA* 30mm SDM from the previous map.

Well, the roadmap hasn't been updated since March 2009 and apparently Pentax won't be doing roadmaps anymore. They had prototypes of the SDM TC and DA* 30mm SDM. They didn't get far enough to name the "super tele" in focal length. Only Hoya knows what's going on with those. My guess is that tele may have been a 300/2.8.

The question is.....

Are you prepared to pay the cost of one?

The DA12-24 isn't cheap, imagine the cost of a DA* version?

I'm willing to pay. A 11-16 added to my 16-50 and 50-135 and my DA* zoom fetish is complete.

Well, almost. A DA* equivalent of Sigma's 120-300 f2.8 would send me over the edge.

But seriously, I've been holding off on the 12-24 for an 11-16 for a couple of years now. The waiting got so frustrating that I was contemplating getting a Nikon D90 just to use the Tokina 11-16. If Pentax came out with an UWA prime, I'd be even happier (no, neither the 14/2.8 and the 15 ltd are wide enough for me)

I don't get it. The DA12-24 is a perfectly capable, even exemplary, lens. Are you holding out for one more millimetre? I am sceptical any lens from Tokina could match it on IQ.

For when things really need to be wide, consider the Samyang 8mm. It implements the stereographic projection so there is much less deformation than with a standard fish-eye.

We have different interests, of course, but there certainly is more to distinguish the 12-24 from the 11-16 than focal length - a full stop. Not a big deal for landscapes, perhaps, but could be critical for me indoors (think: church/museum interiors).

IQ, of course, is not important if you didn't get the shot in the first place.
