How about a quality built TC, 1.4 or 1.5. screw driven and SDM. Make it work on either FF or APS. I use my Tamron 1.4 with my DA300 a lot, works great. But they aren't available any more but as used when you can find one.

Such a TC would always work on FF and APS-C. The fun part is that a 1.4x TC makes any APS-C lens suddenly suitable for FF with no vignetting

So there goes that argument. :P
So because Pentax has a cheap body they don't need entry level options in lenses too? How the heck does that make sense?! (also 550D isn't quite 'entry level as has already been pointed out).

Also its throwing away a great chance for market differentiation... Imagine Pentax had a 35mm or 50mm fast prime for say $120 USD. Pair that with a KX body and you have a killer low light combination at a very low price point...

The point isn't whether pentax has offered this sort of thing before. It is that EVERYONE else is offering it! Its called a competitive marketplace...

Is the market really there anyway? I mean, most people will stay with the kit lens. Not many people buy a fast prime. If they sell a prime at 120$ to 10% of their 5-6% market share I don't think they will make a lot of money from that. So it's probably not very high on their priority list.

And BTW 35mm and 50mm are FF focal lengths. Are they that useful for APS-C? 35mm is a tad too long for a "normal" and 50mm is not quite long enough for portrait. They can work as is but I'd prefer to see more useful FL if possible. I'd like to see a DA L 26 or 28mm f/2 (or even 30mm f/2 like Samsung did for their NX10) and a DA L 55mm f/2.

From what I can gather cheap fast primes are a pretty common progression path from the kit lens... Based upon my detailed market analysis . At least when they are available.

I take your point about the focal lengths, but hey, we don't exactly have the option to buy something cheap at any focal length anyway! I agree, a 28mm 1.8 would be great (pscyological barrier of 2 means a lot to me for some reason).

I've used 50mm on APSC and quite enjoy it, but 55mm is better... How about a 55mm prime? What you say? Its already availabe? How much?

Yes but it's a f/1.4. This would leave some space for a cheap plastic f/2 version.

Sorry for being a complete newb, but this is my first fall in photography. Is the lens info expected to be released at Photokina with the other news?

Hey Rory.... I think it is widely understood to be the case... Not sure why though...

it's not a good idea for pentax to insist on aps-c roadmap,i have seen many pentax users switch to canon&nikon for FF.There are so many guys who were tempted with FF sensor, pentax should not ignore them

It would be interesting to see some exotic new prime. Say 27mm f1.9 or 25mm f2.2. Quite like Pentax. 85 mm? Not a crazy enough number, because everybody else does it. And they refuse to think like everybody else because they're system of values of their own. That's how people remember them. FA77 will always be a legend, but which one of 85s made by Nikon will be remembered as such? First, second, third? Who even knows which one was that and when it was produced?

Indeed; I would love the FA* 85/1.4 successor being labeled as DFA* 83mm/1.4. Because their first fast portrait prime from the 50's was also 83mm (now very rare; I have one). Such a focal length makes remembering the lens much easier, and searching in Google a breeze (there's not much info about the original 83mm anyway).

There are still two lenses left on the Pentax Lens Development Roadmap - DFA 645 wide and DA supertelephoto... That's the only bit of information we have, afaik. Doesn't mean they will release them at Photokina, of course...

That is an *extremely* old roadmap. AFAIK Hoya decided to move away from using the publicly available roadmap as an indication for future lens plans.

Well, yes, but that's all we kind of know. Unless we count all the wishful thinking posts flying around here
