Adam,

If you dont mind me asking, arent you totally and completely burning this persons "cover" posting this?
I had the same impression... but maybe these infos were not under NDA and were given to this person with the green light by Pentax to exfiltrate?

I would imganine that we are at the stage where sales are not to be impacted and viral marketing and buzz are going to play a part.

So, from this, we can take that the K-r will have the following:
  • Native rechargeable battery support as well as optional insert for AA batteries
  • Focusing points in viewfinder
probably doesn't give me enough reasons to upgrade from k-x to k-r at launch price. But I have resisted k-7 so far so k-5 seems to be a way to go.

My biggest gripe about the K-X was the lack of a grip - partly because I use the video mode a lot and hate the batteries running out so quick. I know it's pretty crazy to expect a grip for such a small, cheap camera, but if you look at it another way it seems crazy not to have a grip for such a well endowed, over-achieving camera. If the K-r has a grip and the video mode is still 24p mjpeg, I'll be very interested - though I'll let the dust settle a little before upgrading.

I think special adapter for AA like in EI-2000 or in SFX

The K-x is already an amazing bargain.

Based on past history, I don't expect the price will go down much more. In fact, it might even go up a bit as the last stock goes off shelves.

...there is a cool, unique feature about the K-r that will help really differentiate it from the K-x; it will natively accept a lithium-ion battery but with an insert will also accommodate AA batteries. No grip will be required and a query of available grip to the Pentax rep was met with complete silence...

--- This is exactly what I suggested when K-7 came out! a battery compartment that accept both AA and dedicated battery / a dedicated battery that have the shape of two AA batteries putting side by side. Thanks Pentax! if this is real, I will get the K-5 when it come out!

If that is the coolest feature of the new Pentaxes then call me disappointed.

yay.. and drat.. re. AA/Li+

I'd been grousing about this for years, but not to Pentax - had the K100d even had an insert to hold four AAs as a single unit I would have been happy. I had contemplated duct-taping four together so they would be a single unit, but it probably would have been too tight a fit.

I went with the A200 instead, but came back when the K-7 was a deal/steal in July. I was just a feature or so away from getting that k100d, and then I would not have sold my 40M pancake to get Alpha-mount lenses

K-X = bargain right now and the market recognizes that.

I've argued elsewhere on the forum that the K-X should stay on the market at roughly the existing price because:

* It is properly valued at that price. More than one reviewer has called it a steal.

* It will not, then, compete with new K-? at USD $700-$800 (street price after initial sales flurry).

* Compact size, lots of colors, and high ISO will appeal to beginners to whom AF points are a mystery in any case.

* It can move to big box stores by the pallet-load with a nice intro kit. Maybe try the K-M scheme and add a flash. Imagine a pallet or two at the end of the Walmart/Costco aisle. Just as Nikon did with the D40 after a while. They sold a pile of cameras and locked more users into Nikon.

Can't wait to see how this rolls out as the year comes to an end .....

With the D90 coming to an end I am thinking Sony will discontinue the 12 mp sensor used in the KX anyway. So it may not be possible for Pentax to retain the KX in the lineup even if they wanted to.

Pentax I am fairly certain do not move enough units to persuade Sony to keep on making the sensor.

Pentax cameras cannot be part of such conventional categorization. For example the k-x with:

- 1/6000 max shutter speed
- 12800 max iso
- 100000 certified shutter releases

is at least "Tier 3" in your categorization while k10D, K20D "Tier 2" naturally.
You see?

I think the K-x will stay there and get cheaper and cheaper. Like the Nikon D40......That camera lasted many years, which is a LONG TIME in digital.

Pentax could go to a 4 tier 24 month renewal schedule similar to Nikon.
Tier 1 : D40, D40x, D3000, D3100 Ist* DL, K110, K100, K-m/2000, K-x
Tier 2 : D50, D60, D5000 Ist* DS, K200, K-r
Tier 3 : D70, D80, D90, D7000 Ist* D , K10D, K20D, K-7
Tier 4 : D100, D200, D300s K-5 (the first Pentax camera in this category since MZ-S)
Tier 4.5: D700, D2h,
Tier 5 D2x, D3, D3x,

Some Compact cameras have a ISO of 6400 and a sync speed of 1/2000th of a second.

Because supply suddenly dries up.
Oh wait, Sony also make cameras, as do Leica and Ricoh. So thats 4 companies that use a well established sensor.......

Your right, when Nikon stop using it, it becomes redundant.
